Chapter 27
Jackson POV
I looked out over my pack standing around me in the clearing, which was cloaked in the darkness of the woods. Dawn was a couple of hours away but I hadn't got the patience to wait any longer.
"So why are we all here so early?" Tim said lightly.
"I thought it would be best," I replied without adding any further explanation.
I looked around the circle once more making sure that everyone was giving me their full attention. I noticed Adrian trying to stop a yawn.
"Adrian, having issues with staying awake?" my words were pointed.
He shook his head quickly and kept his gaze fixed at me. I knew that they didn't understand the seriousness of the situation we were in. They hadn't seen the Hunters and they hadn't felt the effects of the poison.
"So under the circumstances we are in, we don't know much about the Hunters," I knew I was talking around the real reason and sounded very formal. But it was better than saying that Cleo wouldn't talk to me.
"We know that they are dangerous and we need to keep an eye out in case more of them attack."
"Okay, that's a start," Wyhatt added helpfully.
"Do you think the Basati know more than what they are telling us?" Johnny piped up.
I felt the annoyance brim up inside me. He was normally so quiet during these meetings, why couldn't he just kept his mouth shut during this one too?
"That might be the case," I admitted, not wanting to lie to my pack.
"So what do you want to do about that?" Wyhatt said, naturally expecting me to have an answer as always.
"I don't think we'll be able to get any more information from Cleo," I started reasoning.
"So how do we get more information then?" Johnny added. I shot him a black look.
"I think that they might have information, so maybe following Alec could be a good idea," Wyhatt added.
"How do you think we are going to do that without getting caught?" Tim added, clearly thinking about what had happened last time the pack had gone after Alec.
"You'll have to be more careful this time," I heard myself say.
I didn't necessary think that following Alec would be a good idea but what other options were left to me? I needed to know more about the Hunters to protect my pack. Cleo was unable or unwilling to give me any more information. On the plus side, this meant that I could keep an eye on her too because the two of them seemed to be spending a lot of time together lately. I frowned at my own thoughts before returning my focus to my pack.
"Tim and Wyhatt, you'll start. Go there now and keep an eye on them. I'll check in on you later on in the morning."
I waved my hand at the three others, "The rest of you, I'll call on you when I need you." They all nodded and started to clear out.
~*~
I slid through the undergrowth and followed the scent of my pack, my nose was not as sharp as it was when I was in my wolf form but good enough to figure out where Tim and Wyhatt must be laying in wait. I tapped Wyhatt on the shoulder as I approached them.
"I need to go," he hissed back at me.
"Why?" I demanded in a voice that was slightly too loud for this stealth mission.
