Chapter 42
Alec POV
The darkest hours of the night were passing by quickly as I stared out into the room, which was dimly lit. Cleo was curled up on the couch, her head in my lap. She had tired herself out crying and fallen into a restless sleep after I had convinced her to try to regain some strength. I had to explain to her over and over that we couldn't do anything until it was light, it was just to risky. I gently stroked her hair. I had known even before we called Rose, what the answer from Central would be. They won't send anyone tonight, they would wait until the morning so that they could assess the risk before sending anyone out. Cleo had frantically started crying when Rose had delivered the news over the phone.
I looked down at her, feeling an overwhelming need to protect her. The bond had kicked into high gear and I felt how the threat of the Hunters pulled out more and more of my instincts to protect my mentee at all costs.
The red haired Hunter. I saw the face of a woman flash before my eyes. Could it really be her? I didn't know what she was doing right now but from the small description Jackson has given to Tim, I guess that maybe it could be true? Why would she have come to this small town? What was her motives?

She stirred, waking up from her sleep. The cold rays of dusk had started to creep in through the window. She looked up at me, her blue eyes widened when her mind connected the dots of what had happened a few hours before.
"We should call Rose again to see what Central has decided," she said and pulled herself up in a sitting position and pushed the button on the small sleek metal cube.
"Rose Petrulla," she said in a small voice. I could sense from the way her shoulder muscles where tensing up that she was worried about what Central had to say.
Rose's face appeared in the glow and the miniature version of her face frowned at us both.
"So I have some news," she started.
"Yes?" Cleo was sitting up straight hanging on to every word.
"Central has agreed for me to come out. Right now they can't spear anyone else," Rose said quickly.
"Really?" Cleo sounded desperate.
"I guess one more Basati is better than none," I tried to rationalise the situation as well as could be done.
"So when will you arrive?" Cleo asked the next logical question. I already knew the answer and I felt a stab of pain as I realised that the answer would only make Cleo even more worried.
"I won't be out there for another 24 hours. Central's headquarters is quite far away," Rose explained. Through the hologram phone I could see Rose's reaction to Cleo's face which was set in a panicked expression.
"I'm leaving right now, I'll text you when I know roughly when I will arrive," Rose added quickly before the hologram version of her face disappeared.
"What do we do now?" Cleo asked and stared at me wide eyed.
"Let's call Tim and ask him and the rest of the pack to come over here," I said.
She nodded and flipped up her phone, her fingers shook slightly as she swiped down to find his number.
I didn't like the fact that I had to work with the wolves. Their unpredictable nature was not what we needed in a situation like this. But I knew there was no way of talking Cleo out of this rescue mission. We had to save Wyhatt sooner rather than later. She would not be able to forgive herself if something happened to him. I looked over at her as she spoke to Tim on the phone. I didn't like the way this was going, but to keep her safe I would even work with those wolves.
