Chapter 41

Cleo POV

The sun was slowly moving down its arch across the sky and the long golden rays pushed through the window and spread themselves over the floorboards. I looked over towards the breakfast bar and across to Alec, who was cooking again. He had lost another bet to me. He really should stop betting on him being able to run faster than me. I smiled to myself at the thought, when he turned around.

"So what are you smiling about?" he asked with a teasing glance in his eye.

"Oh, just at how slow you are when it comes to running."

He threw a kitchen towel in my direction and my hand caught it mid air.

"You should really be nicer to someone who is making you dinner," he pouted jokingly.

"Maybe so," I threw the towel back in his direction. "Want me to set the table?" I offered, grabbing the plates and cutlery from the kitchen counter.

As I placed the blue plates, my mind started wandering. If someone had told me a few months ago that I would have been where I was now I wouldn't have believed them. The most solid thing in my life, Jackson, had completely disappeared. I shivered for a moment, the thought of how easily he had broken my trust still surprised me. But some good things had come from my transformation, I had finally found out more about my parents. I placed the forks down next to the plates and shook my head slightly in wonder, I couldn't quite believe that Rose had actually found someone who knew my parents. The questions about my parents stirred around my mind, as I stared out of the window imagining for a moment what it would be like to be able to ask those questions to someone who actually had some answers.

"Are you okay?" Alec grabbed my hand gently releasing the tight grip I held around the knives.

"Yes, I'm fine. I was just thinking about my parents," I looked up at his brown eyes and they shone with the recognition of another orphan. He moved in closer and wrapped his arms around me, embracing me in a hug.

"I'm sorry, Cleo." he mumbled the words into my hair. I rested my head on his chest for a minute as another thought drifted through my mind, without my transformation I would have never met Rose and Alec. To think that two of the people that now where the most important to me wouldn't have been in my life if it wasn't for the circumstances of my life seemed to make those years bouncing around in foster homes pale slightly in my memory.

I placed the last of the clean plates into the cupboard and looked over at Alec who was wiping down the table.

"Good dinner?" he raised his eyebrows with his question, as he caught me looking over at him.

"Thank you, it was lovely."

"So I wanted to talk to you about something," he said as he walked over and leant against the breakfast bar.

"Okay."

"So with Tim," he started.

I cut in, "I know that you don't trust him. I get it he hasn't exactly been friendly towards you. But he's my friend."

He held up his hands, motioning for me to stop, "Look all I was going to say was that I'm glad that he came and spoke to you at the Manson's party. I think it's a good thing that he still wants to maintain contact."

"Oh," I breathed, surprised by how calm he was about it all. He didn't know Tim and he had no reason to trust him after how the wolves had behaved. So why was he so relaxed about it?

"So why are you so okay with this?" the question rolled out of my mouth before I could stop myself and it sounded a lot more accusatory than what it had done in my mind.
