Chapter 45
Alec POV
The door closed behind us and for a moment we stood there in the hallway, looking at each other in silence. My hands cupped her face and I stared into her eyes, breathing, "Are you okay?"
She nodded and said with a fragile voice, "How bad was it?"
"He's bound up against a wooden pole in the middle of their campsite." Even without the mind link I could feel how she was breaking. My heart felt for her, I wanted to tell her that it was all over, that she would never have to face another Hunter again. But I knew that wasn't true. I racked my mind, trying to figure out what had changed when it suddenly struck me, "It's not your fault." I spoke softly and I could see the pain welling up in her eyes as a tear rolled down her cheek.
"I just can't help but to think of my parents," she explained. I cursed at myself inwardly for telling her, I knew that she had a right to know but now that she did she felt a greater fear when thinking about the Hunters. I needed to do something to shake this off, she needed to face them with confidence especially if I was going to be able to keep her safe and save Wyhatt at the same time.
I felt the jolt as our minds connect, with my mind I tried to show her how deep my desire to keep her safe was. I could feel her frayed nerves calm down. I flashed through memories of each fight I had ever been in, trying to show her that even if they are scary Hunters can be defeated and she was with one of the best Basati fighters there is. Her hand slowly found mine, giving it a small squeeze, her amber eyes meeting mine, "I didn't know you were such a good fighter." The thought bounced around our collective mind as I showed her the memory of when Central awarded me the highest honour a fighter Basati can be bestowed.
A jolt passed through me again, her eyes switching from amber to Steel, "I get it." Her voice was far calmer now.
"You should trust your own abilities," I said. "I have showed you what I have done, but I have no doubt that you are even better than me. Your instincts and abilities are stronger than mine can ever be. So trust them and trust that I will always protect you." The promise hung between us for a moment before she broke the silence, "So how do we save Wyhatt?"
Her words brought me back down to earth and I pulled my focus away from her eyes and started walking in to the living room.
I pulled up the lid of an old chest and start rummaging through it. I knew what I was looking for and I hoped it would be here. I found the small spikey dark balls and pulled them out.
"What are those?" Cleo frowned at one, which was resting in my open palm.
"They are a combination of two things. They are a knock out gas, which affects supernatural creatures and human with Basati being the only ones that are immune. Secondly, they are trackers."
"Trackers?" she frowned at me again.
"When they are thrown the black smoke they create hold small tracking molecule which nestle themselves every – in the skin of Hunters, in their clothing and in all surroundings."
"So a double threat?"
"Something like that," I confirmed. "They were developed my Central to tackle the Hunters. As Hunters normal attack at least twice it's good to keep track of them, should we not be able to handle all of them in one go. So the tracking devices means that we can keep tabs on them both through knowing their location but also through an audio link."
Her face passed from confused to amused and then setting to grim determination, "So if we use these, that means that only you and I would be able to go on the rescue mission."
