Chapter 20
Cleo POV
I released the grip of the throwing star in the same moment as I realised that it was Jackson that had walked into my bedroom. It flew through the air, the metal reflecting clearly as I helplessly looked at it travel towards its target. It sliced him through the surface of his right arm before landing in the wooden frame of the bathroom door. My hands closed around the second star that I had made ready before knowing who the intruder in my house was.
"What are you doing here?" I walked past him into the bathroom and grabbed a towel and handed it to him.
"The back door was open and there was a black out. I was worried," he pressed the towel against his upper arm. My mind jumped over my natural reaction of questioning Jackson about why he had been in my back garden at this time and focused in on the fact that my back door had been opened. Hunters? My mind called out to Alec and I felt the jolt of our mind link locking into place.
"There might be Hunters here," I let my thought bounce around in our shared mind and I could sense that he was already on his way over.
"Why are your eyes that glowing red colour?" Jackson frowned at me and squeezed the towel harder against his wound. I choose to ignore him and pushed him into the bathroom.
"Stay here and don't move," I breathed out my command and turned on my heels, stealthily moving towards the door to my room.
I slowly pushed open the door and looked down the hallway. I could see a cloaked figure climbing the stairs. He was holding his hands in a strange position in front of his chest. The word crossbow passed through my mind at the same time as I heard the click from the trigger. I weaved past the arrow, feeling it slightly grace my arm as it passed. I was fully focused on the man in front of me when I heard the thud of impact. The arrow had hit something that was not wood or walls, it had hit a body. I knew that I didn't have any time to turn around, so I let my throwing star fly. I could sense that it would hit the target in the same way as it had hit the Hunter that we met in the woods. I saw one glimmer of the reflection from the metal of it, as it lodged itself in the Hunter's neck before he fell to the floor. The second before I turned around he was grabbing at his neck, pulling it out and allowing himself a quicker passage out of this world.
"Jackson," I sat down next to him. He was holding his hands around the arrow, which was lodged in one of his ribs. His fingers were shaking as he was trying to find a grip around the edge of it.
"Don't pull it out," I growled at him and meeting his perplexed eyes with a commanding stare.
"It's clear down here!" Alec's voice reached us both from downstairs. "I'm putting the power on now."
I looked over at Jackson, sitting propped up against the hallway wall, "Wait here for a minute."
I stomped into my room and pulled off my dressing gown. The arrow had completely ruined the sleeve of it. I threw it on the floor and quickly pulled on a pair of running trousers and a top.
When I emerged from my room, I found Jackson standing up and quietly waiting for me in the hallway. He was still holding his hand against his rib cage but he had taken my advice and had not made any attempts at removing the arrow. At least he listened to some advice...
"Let's go downstairs," I commanded shortly and he followed gingerly behind me as I side step past the Hunter and walked down the stairs.
