We all walked around for a while to try to catch the intruder. We didn't know what to look for, but I did know that something was happening, because why else did my necklace glow like that before we found the body? It really took a while before any of us saw any movement or signs of the intruder. And it was a pretty big sign.
Suddenly, a loud shout came out of the nearby wooded area and when we saw what it was, he was just hanging onto the foot that had metal jaws digging themselves into his flesh painfully. He grunted in pain as he pulled at the trap on his foot. His eyes were shut tightly as he growled through his teeth from all the pain he was going through, which was the only time I actually saw his face throughout his struggle. We were watching from the distance as he tried to get up, so he had no idea that we were watching him. He limped deeper into the woods, only to be yanked back. He groaned in frustration as he attempted this multiple times, trying to get away. Then he fell backward and tried getting the chain from inside the ground so he could walk freely, but whoever made that trap dug pretty deep into the ground and a pole inside one of the links of the chain to make sure they had a catch, because a few hard yanks, which I could have sworn I saw the ground move a little, he gave up and just lied there, looking for a way to escape. All this happened without him even looking in our direction, so I couldn't really tell if he was Steve's clone or someone else. I watched for a while, and I think it was about an hour before any of us even moved, which I was pretty surprised in how long Steve sat there in the annoying silence.
I took a step closer and tried my hardest not to be heard by "Steve". The real Steve side-stepped to the right and pulled Cecelia to the barn, which, I guess, was a pretty good precaution, as I got closer. They were both in the barn by the time I had entered the forest area the intruder was in. I heard his breathing, which sounded more like wheezing, making me think he was sick or more hurt than I thought, and made sure my breathing was more quiet than his. He turned over and was now facing me. I stopped when I saw his face, and I nearly choked on what I saw.
He smelt like he walked through a burning building, and his breathing sounded like a lot of smoke went into his lungs. He had burn marks on his cheek from where I believe fire had reach and he somehow didn't breathe it in. His pants had a little black at the bottom and his shirt had ash rubbed into it. I was pretty frightened at what I saw, but where was the fire, and why was he was there? Not to mention why is he here?
I stepped right beside him and he twitched, as if a fly landed on him or he was dreaming. He slowly opened his eyes and I was shocked. I stumbled backwards and started running away when I heard a raspy voice, "no, wait. Please..." He coughed a few times, and I turned around to face the helpless man I have watched for an hour, and he looked like he had no other hope but me. But that wasn't why I ran.
His eyes were empty.
I gasped as he reached his scorched hand out and had both of his white eyes stuck on me as he waited for assistance. The wheezing got a little more quiet after a little staring. And it didn't take me long to realize that it was turning nighttime.
But I couldn't keep him out here like this. He can be the key to survival, especially if everyone can get along. But will that happen? I looked up the hill and the other two were now in the house, staring out of the window, which made me think that they had been watching since the sun started setting over the field. Time is running out on both of us. I looked back down at the man, who was still waiting, and had an idea. "I'm going to get help and some supplies. I'll be back." And I waited for him to take it in, and he nodded.
"Just... Please make it (cough) before the night comes." Is he afraid of the night, or is it that he doesn't want to wait all night? Or is it the monsters and how that can threaten my survival? I nodded and ran uphill toward the house. Steve and Cecelia met me at the door.
