It's been a couple of weeks and Max and I have been seeing each other a lot and when I say a lot I mean a lot. We see each other everyday and we do something different each time. Once we went to an ice cream place down a couple streets from my neighborhood and we had to ride bikes to get there and cover my wings, Max looked absolutely shocked when he saw how I covered them up and helped me fingers out different ways to hide them according to what I'm doing. Another time we went down to his little pier and went swimming because it was super hot out that day. And many times we just sat on either my platform or his pier and talked the day away, many times going home after the sun had set, the moon had risen, and the stars shined brightly in the sky. One time we even went stargazing all night where I had to sneak out my window and almost fell from the second floor trying to get back in the next morning. All in all, we've had a heck of a few weeks. Lately though, while we've been together I've caught him staring at me once or twice and it was pretty awkward. But then again I've been staring more often as well, I'm just going to leave it be, it doesn't bother me.
Today we planned to go to the pier and just hang around there but today is the first day that it's rained in the daytime for over two months. It only really rains at night when it does so I never had to worry about daytime rain with Max for the past month since I've known him. It's well into November but the temperature doesn't drop too much because where we live it warm most of the time except for the last week of December through the first week of March. So since today it's raining it's the first time in over a month and a half that I can't even see Max since a month ago was when we had met up and really gotten to talk and get to know each other more.
I sat around my house some, bored, and eventually ended up falling asleep on my bed.>>><<<
"Come on Grace, hurry up!" Max shouts at me while I try keeping up with him as we run through the woods to get to the pier. It's hot out today so we decided to go swimming.
"Hey! Not everyone is as fast as you Max!" I shout back at him. And then I realize 'oh you wanna go Max, try beating me now'. I tried playing fair to only realize, well why aren't I flying there. I quit talking for a minute and then take to the sky, unfurling my wings from under my backpack that has everything I need in it. I quickly fly around him, making sure there's no way he can see me, and lightly touchdown on the pier, sitting down Indian style.
A minute later Max bursts through the trees but before he can see me he turns around and yells out into the woods. "Come on Grace, just because I beat you here doesn't mean that you've got to mope around about it."
He doesn't see me. Perfect. "Actually I think that I am the winner of this race, Mr. Max." His head whips around and his expression is priceless. Its a mix between shock and astonishment before turning into one of amusement.
"Oh really," he says, "you sure you can swim?" I give him an annoyed look and start to speak. "Of course I can, why would y—" he picked me up, not giving me a chance to protest and before I knew it I was in the river with a laughing Max on the dock. Still dry.
"You better get in here now for throwing me in here."
"Oh don't worry, I'm coming, I'm coming." He backed up taking a giant leap and splashing me with water again. After that it was a giant water war from there.>>><<<
I woke up with a smile on my face to tree branches banging against my window. I mentally sigh and get up to check the clock. 4:00. I better go start helping my mom with dinner tonight since it's one of my favorites, homemade chicken noodle soup and garlic bread. Surprisingly it takes a really long time to make from scratch so we start two hours before we plan to have dinner. I get up and hop down the stairs, completely jumping over the bottom step to avoid another 'accident'. I walk into the kitchen and start pulling out the materials to make dinner when I hear a knock on the back door. I run over to the door, wondering who would be out in this weather when I am greeted with the sight of a slightly damp Max.
"Oh my gosh, what are you doing outside? Come in, I am not having my best friend die of hypothermia."
"Oh, so am I your best friend." He asks playfully.
"Yes, now don't get too cocky about it. I'm just starting dinner and I'm sure my mom won't mind if you help," I reply.
"Really, you don't think she'd mind," he said doubtfully, "well I really don't want to go back yet after getting to see you and this could be what we get to do together today, cooking. But just so you know, I suck at cooking so if you don't want the food to be awful I'd keep me away from it."
"Ok, ok, but I don't care how it ends up. You're helping me." I'm honest about that, I think we'll have a blast making food. "Let's get started."
About halfway through cooking, my mother walks in, taking in out appearances of flour dusted, disheveled clothing and our messy hair, Max's longish hair sticking out in crazy directions. Even though she probably stands there for five minutes before making us aware of her presence, causing us both to jump.
"Mom! Why didn't you tell us you were here," I was embarrassed because we were teasing each other around the time she walked in. "Well I could say the same about you having a friend over without my knowledge, and I haven't even met him before," she says exasperatedly before turning to Max.
"If I may ask, what is your name young man and what're you doing here." Max looked really uncomfortable.
"Um...," he starts his playful demeanor gone, "well, my name is Max and your daughter Grace is my best friend."
"Oh! I'm so sorry I interrupted, but Max, since it's raining so hard, would you stay for dinner, I would really like to get to know my daughter's best friend more," she says with a genuine smile. I'm happy that she likes Max so far, this can't go that badly. I turn towards Max to see his reaction. He looks unsure about all of this but I think in the end it would be okay.
"Please Max, at least just tonight. Please," his head towards me, his eyes searching mine for any signs that this could end badly. Finally after a minute he gets this glint in his eyes and turns back towards my mother.
"That would be great, thank you so much Mrs....," as he trails off my mother cuts in to answer his question. "Oh, you can just call me Sophie."
"Alright then. Thank you for inviting me Ms. Sophie," he replies. It seems that he's getting more comfortable around my mom.
"It was my pleasure, now I'll leave you two to get back to cooking and whatnot. Have fun," she says as she heads back to the second floor, most likely her bedroom.
After a few seconds I chime "ok, let's get this finished so we can finally eat, I'm starving." He just laughs, "I agree with you there Grace."
