"Luke you're driving sixty miles an hour!"
"There's no one here, it's fine!"
"I don't want to die! You're swerving everywhere!"
I could see from his side profile that he was gritting his teeth, a bad habit I used to have.
"July you're the one rushing me!"
"You can go at a speed that won't terminate us!"
"It's okay we'll get there faster."
"Luke what if we get pulled over-"
And then, the deafening, heart dropping sound of sirens could be heard behind us.
Luke's breathing quickened as he pulled over to the side, my own heart pounding in my chest.
"Crap crap crap crap, I can't go to prison! July holy shit I can see them in the mirror-"
"Calm down. Just let me do the talking." I whispered as the cop knocked on the window, Luke nodding as he pushed the button and lowered the glass.
"Is there a problem officer?" I asked.
The lady stuck her sunglasses on top of her head, "Kid do you realize how fast you were goin-"
"I don't know what I'm doing okay? We're just trying to get back San Francisco cause her friend is in the hospital and I don't really know how to drive this car and I'm so scared right now and this is all her fault so if we go to jail please don't tell my mom!" Luke rambled off to the middle aged cop.
I stared at Luke in pure confusion.
What happened to me doing all the talking?
"How old are you guys?"
"I'm sixteen," Luke said pointing at himself, "and she's-" He paused, obviously not knowing my age.
"Seventeen." I answered.
"Seventeen." He repeated slowly, looking at me and then back to the officer.
"Hmmm," she said as she leaned against the door, "I'll have to take you into the station, but I'll take you to the city. You said you have a friend in the hospital?"
"Yes we do." I answered quickly.
"Alright, step out of the car you two."
Both of us sighing deeply, we unbuckled or seat belts and got out onto the icy road. I walked to Luke's side where she was telling him what was going to happen.
"You'll ride with me back to the city, I'll get your car towed. At the hospital, you'll make sure your friend is okay, then to the SF police department got it? We'll contact your parents."
"I'm not going to jail right? You can take away my license for life but-"
"Probably just a fine, we'll have to look up your background and how long you've had your license. You said you're sixteen so, that might be a bit of a problem." She informed us as she lead Luke and I to the cop car.
"July I am good as dead-"
"Calm down please? I'm stressed enough as it is with Calum, I just need to get there without any other intrusions."
Luke fell silent as we got into the back seat of the car, the front seats divided by a screen.
I honestly just wanted to sleep my problems away.
