"Hello?"
"CC? Is that you?" My voice came out smaller than I would have hoped for.
"Winter?" He sounded surprised. He probably thought I wasn't going to speak to him or his band mates ever again.
"Yeah. Hi, what's up?" I tried to make my voice sound as aloof as possible. I didn't want to make him uncomfortable by jumping right into a serious conversation. I would rather pretend that nothing had changed between us at all. It made things so much easier that way. CC had other plans.
"Winter, I've been worried about you," he spoke softly, as though he was scared that admitting this to me would send me into a fit of seizures or something. "Bret told me what happened. I'm proud of you."
Hearing that someone besides Nikki thought that I had done the right thing made me feel a little better. I mean, of course Nikki would tell me I did good. He wanted me to break up with Bret, and he just wanted me to feel better rather than dwell on the past. But CC didn't owe me anything, and here he was telling me I had done the right thing. I couldn't help but smile.
"Thanks CC," I murmured into the phone. "But I'm more worried about Bret. How is he holding up?"
There was hesitation on the other end of the line, and I worried that maybe CC would withhold that information from me. But, after some movement on the other end, I heard CC sigh before speaking.
"He's doing better. He's been writing a lot of music lately, 'therapy' he calls it."
I raised my eye brows. "Oh...?"
"Yeah. He's actually been working on some great stuff. I'm impressed. We're using it on our next album. The new single should actually be hitting the radio pretty soon here," CC said. I could hear the smile in his voice. "Also, he talks to me a lot more than he used to. It feels like we're friends again."
I grinned at that. I knew that CC and Bret had a friendship much like Tommy and Nikki's. Seeing them argue so often was heartbreaking. To hear that they were now bonding over Bret's broken heart only proved to make me feel even better about my decision to leave. If some good could come of this break up, that was all I needed to hear.
"That's great, CC! I'm so glad to hear you guys are friends again!"
"Yeah, it's pretty cool." There was a pause. "I hope you and I can still be friends too."
His words melted my heart and I couldn't help but to smile. CC was such a great person, and one of my main concerns was that I might lose him after the break up. It was wonderful to hear that CC felt the same way and that he still considered me a friend.
"Of course," I answered softly, grinning like an idiot.
"Great," he said with a laugh. "Look, I'm really sorry, but I was actually about to step out of the house before you called. Can I call back later? Maybe we can set up a little dinner date, eh?"
I giggled. "Sure, CC. I'd love to."
"Bitchin'. I'll talk to you later, sweet stuff. Stay beautiful."
"You too," I joked.
With that, he was gone.
