[Part 23]

“You broke my promise. What do you have to say for yourself?” I asked the figure who wore Sparda’s appearance now, standing in the doorway and watching as he slowly turned around, dissolving the Sparda sword quickly.

“I apologize, but there is nothing more I can offer to free myself from your vengeful vice.”

“You are still rhyming.” I observed, and he nodded.

“By habit more than by nature now. It will take time to erase the memory of rhyming sounds.”

“Say something out of a rhyme. Prove to me that you’re free from Lucifer.”

He gave me a frustrated look, but opened his mouth for words –words that didn’t rhyme.

“You shouldn’t be here. You should be on your way back to Devil May Cry.”

It was enough evidence for me as proof of Vergil’s words.

“Not without you. We need someone to open portals for us, no?”

“I… I can’t. There are things I have to do here.”

“Was escaping this hellhole not your desire?”

“I have realized more that I need to do. Please, don’t ask, and let me on my road, before your plans go askew.”

“Fine. Then return us our weapons. We need Yamato and the amulets if we want to get out of here.”

“Then you will have it. Please, I implore you, leave here as soon as you can see fit. There is trouble brewing, and staying longer here in hell will be your own undoing.”

“Trust me; I don’t want to be staying here longer than I want to. But I need to be sure of some things. Did you stab me because you knew Lucifer was going to free you?”

“I knew he needed just a little more convincing that I was true to him. After all, throughout these years, I have followed his every whim. I am sorry to have taken you out and used you for my advantage.”

For one demon, I had to admit that he was full of regret for something other demons would do without thinking twice. Surprise; surprise, this con artist actually had a heart for guilt.

“No, I understand. What I don’t understand was the stunt with Daniel. You know I will never forgive you for that. Why did you do it?”

“I needed you pissed off at me when we met Lucifer. He feels more in confidence if discord is sown between unlikely partners like us. When he is confident, the easier he lets his servants go.”

I must say he had thought far in tricking Lucifer. This guy was a true blue con artist –there was no doubt of it.

Trickster opened his mouth to say more, but something seemed to stop him halfway as his eyes suddenly narrowed. “Come in. Hide. Quick, before he comes.”

I knew that hushed tone, and knew better than to disobey, though I did whisper as I made quickly towards the closest dark corner.

“’He’ who?”

“My brother.” Trickster whispered back just as quietly as he piled bodies of the demons he’d just killed in front of me, creating another shadow to block me. I hoped my silver-white hair didn’t give me away, as Trickster pretended to resume killing demons. True enough, a new voice came in quickly after, and I was surprised at how close their voice sounded.

“Neil, you are working with the sons of Sparda, are you not?”

“Brother! How are you? I have not seen you for long. I have great news!” Trickster –Neil –greeted in a light tone, and I took my time to whirl in the fact that Trickster had a brother. A top-notched con artist had a brother –so did it mean that his brother was also a con artist?

“You cannot do this, Neil. We made a promise, remember?”

“Peter, you cannot hope to hold me to my words. I am a con artist by nature. Lying is what I do best.”

“Are you betraying me now?”

“No, I’m trying to free you from Mundus now. We will be brothers forever, in Hell or in the living world. I prefer the latter, brother, and I will work my best to help you out of your slavery.”

“I am no con artist like you, Neil. I cannot lie my way through.”

“I know. But I can find a way to make Mundus force you out of his slavery. Just give me time.”

“You will achieve nothing working with the sons of Sparda, Neil. They are dangerous.”

“It is the demons hunting after them that are dangerous. The sons of Sparda are just fellow half-devils. Give them leave and a reason to help; and they will show you results.”

“I don’t trust them. Their father was a traitor.”

“They do no harm to the existence of the demon world.”

“I still do not trust them.”

“Then do you trust me?”

“No more than I do the Sparda’s.”

“Do you trust in our pact we made as children then?”

There was a pause. “Yes.”

“Then wait for me. You cannot be here now, Peter. You need to leave.”

“Alright. Don’t you betray me, Neil, or I will never forgive you. I will hunt after you personally, and I will make you regret your decisions.”

“I give you my word.”

This time, I heard footsteps stomping away, and I waited till they were finally out of earshot before I moved from my hiding spot.

“You have a brother?”

“In blood before death. Peter was my younger brother. He was always bullied in school, so I picked up tricking and pranking to get back at his bullies. He died young, and when he returned to me in demonic form, begging me to be a demonic form of the con artist I was, I didn’t ask twice. We were both servants of Mundus, and were happy about it. Until Lucifer took me from Mundus, and the bastard stopped us from seeing each other. I swore to myself that I would free us from the slavery of both Mundus and Lucifer, and I would bring Peter back to Devil May Cry. Demon or not, we were going to enjoy ourselves –without slavery.”

“He’s the reason you’re staying behind?”

“Yes. You had better go off now, Damon Kries. Your family needs you.”

I guess it was time to leave. But before I did, Trickster seemed to have a few last words to say.

“Take care of your girlfriend, Damon. She’s carrying something that is most precious to you.”

“Carrying what?” I stopped with one leg out of the hallway. Had she found something that I lost somewhere, somehow?

“You will find out soon enough. Now go.”

That was Trickster’s farewell for me.

I guessed it was good enough a bid goodbye than any.
