[Part 25]
Years later…
“What do I see you doing, Daniel?!? Take that penknife away from her!” A woman cried as she rushed into the room, screaming at the man who was now the leader of the mega company.
Under the hand of the slight-improved man, the sales of Kries Tech had climbed the charts, and was one of the world’s biggest companies despite it having only a small HQ in the middle of the small town they called home.
“Hey, I was just being educational. She was asking why the penknife was such a dangerous weapon and why her mother wouldn’t –for the life of her –let her touch it ever.” The man shrugged, still letting the five-year old child sit on his reclining chair, waving the penknife around as if it were her favorite toy.
“Educational, my ass! You’re trying to teach her how to fight! Isn’t Damien enough for you?” The woman ran over, snatching the penknife from her daughter’s hands, ignoring the sorrowful screaming of the child craving for the weapon again.
“Hey, it’s in the Kries’ blood to be a little violent and ready for fights. Mum had me learning self defense when I was their age. I learnt to wield a gun at seven!” The boss of the mega company didn’t seem to see anything wrong with whatever he had just said, and the woman wondered –for the life of her –why she even bothered bringing her children here at all.
“Come on, Wynter. Let’s just go. Uncle Daniel’s being stupid again. You don’t want to be like him next time when you grow up.” She took her child gently by the hand this time, but her daughter merely had curious eyes now instead of crying for her lost toy.
Wynter Kries looked almost like her mother, except that she had brilliant silver-white shining hair and perfect aquamarine blue eyes like her uncle. She was tall for girls her age, and had a pretty heart-shaped face that resembled her mother. In those eyes, there was intelligence that didn’t fit a five year old child like her. Of course, it was because she had inherited her high IQ from her parents, and it did help that she was a fast learner.
“But why, Mummy? Uncle Daniel is a rich man with lots of money and power! I want to be like him!” Wynter refused to leave her seat, shaking her mother’s hand away as she sat in her uncle’s chair, feeling powerful to be sitting in the big boss’s seat.
“Ha! Told you Wynter loves me! Don’t you, my little darling girl?” Daniel grabbed his niece in his arms, throwing her in the air and eliciting a scream of shock and part-delight from her.
“Don’t do that! You’re going to drop her some day.” Trish yelled at her brother-in-law, but everyone knew he would never change.
“My dear girl, your uncle Daniel has power, but let’s not forget, he is quite stupid and daft sometimes. You can be powerful and have lots of money and not be like stupid like him.” Trish addressed her daughter with a smile, grinning when the man in topic made a form of a protest.
“I can? How, Mummy? Has someone been like that before? Have you met someone like that before? Can he or she beat Uncle Daniel?” Wynter’s wide eyes held so much of her father’s curiosity that Trish almost couldn’t stand it.
Now that her children were five, Trish could not help but wonder where the hell her husband was. All these while, she had held on to tight hope that he would return. But he had never shown any signs at all. The first year after their separation had been the worst. She had hallucinated about him almost every other moment, she could never sleep.
Of course, everyone had put in effort to fake her husband’s death attributed to a car accident at the corner of the town. Dante had been the one pretending to be her dead husband when they pulled him out of the wreckage that had once been a car, and the acting of grief by their fellow family members had not been entirely fake either. It was a simple act of hacking from Daniel, bribing of selected members of the public that had the death of the boss Kries Tech going flawlessly. The funeral became a mass event, and everyone cried over the coffin which contained Dante sleeping in there.
