Chapter One - She's Trouble
The thought of losing your Mom should be a horrifying thought. Not for me.
I wish I could say that I was ashamed to be happy to see her gone, but I couldn't. I truly felt no pain to watch the cops barge through our front door that was barely holding on and handcuff her before my very own eyes. It hurt about as much as a falling onto a soft cushioned bed after a long day.
Not that I'd know that feeling first hand.
Now it's been three years since I've seen my hometown. Three damn years and not a thing has changed. After watching the police personally take Linda, my mother, away I had no where else to go. And that is how I ended up here.
At the end of the sidewalk leading up to my old house. The house that my Dad and Matty still lived in. Through the large front window you could see straight into the family dinning room. It must have been not long after seven because looking in I could see my Dad, gulping back his grape juice at the table to finish off his dinner.
Around was Matty and my father's new wife Cynthia. Also I couldn't help but notice the young boy who sat up in a high chair inbetween Cynthia and Matty. Of course I wouldn't have known that they had a new addition to their family.
As I stood outside, the tears nearly rimmed my eyes to watch the happy family sitting around, all smiling as I stood on the outside looking it. It seemed that was always the way it was for me in this family. I was never good enough, and when I started acting up and behaving in ways I shouldn't have, I was completely shut out of the family. Cynthias hate for me grew immensly and Dad seemed to have lost all respect in me.
It was wrong to show up here, especially uninvited.
Knowing that, I still took slow, long strides up to the front door and placed my fist against it a couple of times. My heart was ramming in and out inside my chest but I used all my strength to stop myself from looking weak and weary. I plastered a forced smirk on my face and within seconds the door flung open and jaws dropped.
"Oh no.." Was the only words that managed to escape Cynthias slack jaw. I pretended to be checking my nails as her eyes widened at me, clearly shocked. I could tell that I made her nervous. "John!" She screamed.
"Jessalyn," My dad gasped, now appearing behind her. "I wasn't expecting to see you here."
"Well," A cheeky grin rose on my face. "Here I am."
Everyone remained silent.
I raised my eyebrows at the two. "So are you going to let me in or do I need to break and enter?" I wondered out loud. The look taking over Cynthias face told me that I was not welcome here. Who can blame her, I mean I don't exactly have the best track record.
My father nodded, taking the door from her and opening it wider for me to enter. Cynthia was still glaring at me was if I had three heads. Her whole body went tense as I walked past her, I could have sworn I saw her flinch when I dropped my bag on the floor. The mouth on her still hanging open, she murmured something under her breath.
