Chapter Four - The Infamous Jessalyn Hart
"Hello?" I said in form of a question, my voice shaky as I pressed my phone to me ear. I've been dreading the moment of my phone ringing since I got back and now it was time.
"Baby!" The drunk, hoarse voice on the other end screamed. I winced at the voice and pulled it away from my ear. "Where are you? I am totally free until my hearing. Isn't that great?" Her shrill voice echoed in my ears.
"Mom-" I started, my voice cracking. "Don't call me." I demanded.
"What!' She shrieked, her drunk slurr made me cringe. I gripped tighter on my phone. "Tell me where you are right now."
I piled up my face and ran a nervous hand through my hand. "No."
"Why are you being so ungrateful for everything I've done for you?" She snarled, "Babe.." She trailed off. I heard a muffling in the background before she spoke up again. "She's being a little bitch on us again, Kyle." She replied without even covering her phone.
I sucked in a deep breath at the mention of his name. "Don't call me anymore!" I shot as I hung up the phone aggresively and threw it onto my bed. "Ugh!" I grunted out to myself, grabbing two fistfuls of my hair.
"Jess-" I jumped around at the sound of someone voice behind me. "Are you ready for school?" Carson asked awkwardly.
I glanced around my room, looking for my school books, "Um, yeah." I answered with the shake of my head as I found my things and picked them up. The tone in my voice still came out weak and weary, because it was uncontainable.
Carson's sad eyes studied me, making me self concious on about whether or not I seemed as upset as I really was. "Lyn, Who was that.. on the phone?" He asked hesitantly, a frown on his face as he looked down on me.
"No one, it doesn't matter.." I trailed off, looking anywhere but at him.
"It does matter!" He shot back, his voice laced with fury and his narrowed gaze burning deep into my skin. What did he care anyway? It was none of his buisness. I rolled my eyes at him and pushed past, out the door. "Fine." He grumbled to himself.
I sighed, "I have much bigger things to worry about than that phone call, Carson. It wasn't a big deal. I'm more concerned on whether or not I'm going to pass Chemistry." I brought up, quickly changing the subject.
He raised an eyebrow at me. "It's not that hard, Lyn."
"If it's so easy then why don't you start tutoring me?" I joked, smirking at him.
Of course I expected him to say 'hell no' especially since it wasn't a legit invitation. Which is why I was surprised when he simply replied, "Okay." shrugging his shoulders.
I widened my eyes at him and my smirk slipped off my face. "Really? Because I was just k-"
"I'll do it," He assured me.
"You're going to regret this, Car." I informed him as I slid on my shoes and walked out the front door and to his truck. So maybe I was going to accept his offers to drive me to school in the morning, considering I'll probably never see my car again.
I guess this was an upside that my brother's best friend was the same age as me and not in college like him.
The ride to school was short and quite. Neither of us spoke a word until we pulled into the parking lot and parked the truck. He glanced over at me for a long while as if he were signalling for me not to get out yet.
"What?" I snapped more hatefully than planned.
"Nothing." He said as he grabbed his bag and hopped out, slamming the door shut. I did the same and wondered off towards the school before him.
