Chapter Three - Detention

I slammed the house door shut as I entered and threw my bag to the side, kicking off my shoes. I slumped down on the couch but I wasn't in comfort for long. It was only mere seconds before Cynthias appeared in front of me with her hand placed firmly on her hips.

"What is this I hear about you getting a detention?" She spat out, empahsising the 'detention' as if it were some sort of fatal crime. Her eyes glared down at me, burnign with fury.

"Oh Cynthia. You always did like to over react, didn't you?" I smirked, hopping up and pushing past her. Her footsteps followed, hot on my trail.

"I don't think I am over reacting, Jessalyn. First a detention, what's next? Parties, fighting, drugs, jail, prison?"  She shot before she grumbled under her breath. "Just like you're mother."

I narrowed my eyes at her. Nothing else said 'You're nothing but a failure and a dissapointment' than comparing me with my Mother. "Yeah, probably." I shrugged, pretending like I didn't care as I flung open the fridge door.

"You really have no shame.. nothing to say for yourself?" She questioned.

I shrugged my shoulders again, "Actually yes." Her face turned to me as her eyebrows raised. "What's for dinner?" I smirked.

She scoffed heavily as the door opened and shut, "John!" She called out, her voice shaking at how irritated she was at me.

"Yes dear?" He replied, as he came through the hosue and entered the kitchen. He patted the top of her head as he kissed her forehead. Cynthia's face expression didn't change one but.

John's eyes finally landed on me, "Oh no." He whispered to himself as he looked between us.

Cynthia sighed, "Jessalyn, got detention today." She stated angrily, tossing those hands back to her hips as she tossed the cloth in her hand to the counter. She made it sound like I've commited one of the six deadly sins.

Or was it seven?

John grunted as he folded his arms over his chest, reminding me of Carson. "What did you do this time?" He demanded. Love you too, Dad. Thank's for having some faith in me..

"Nothing." I alleged, quirking the corner of my mouth up. A ran a hand through my hair and turned away, opening a cupboard.

"That's it," Cynthia blew up. "I can't take this, John. She has to go." Her face almost looked as if she were on the verge of tears. Hello for over dramatic. He pinched the bridge of his nose, stuck on what to do. "She's been here one night and she's already causing trouble."

I rolled my eyes at her. She sounded like she was so surprised, when she has already clearly stated that I was nothing but trouble.

John glared over at me. "What happened, Jessalyn?"

"Nothing. He asked me a question and I gave him the answer. Evidently the wrong one.." I laughed and he groaned out loud followed by taking in a deep breath through his nose. Cynthia stood off, still shaking in furiousness.

"Did you really have to get in trouble the first day of school?" He shot, raising his voice. I went to open my mouth but he cut me off. "We gave you the benefit of the doubt you couldn't even make it through one day."

I snorted a bit of a laugh, "Are you kidding me?" I narrowed my eyes and took a step closer to John and Cynthia. "You've barely given me a chance. God, you probably wouldn't have even let me through the door unless I invited myself in."

My eyes shifted around the room to where Matty was now entering with his head down, oblivious to everything that was going on. When he finally looked up the first thing his eyes reached was the way Cynthia stood the way she always had when she was angry.

"What's going on in here?" He asked in a serious tone.

Cynthia offered her input before he barely finished his question, before John cut her off "Your sister here-"

"It doesn't matter, because it isn't going to happen again." John shot indignantly. "Am I right, Jessalyn?" Matty quirked an eyebrow, but I groaned loudly before answering.

"Yes sir." I scolded sarcastically as I rolled my eyes. "Whatever you say."

Anger corsed through my veins as I noticed the complete distaste in Cynthia's face. The way she turned up her nose at me gave me nothing but hate for her. She never cared about me, only what other people thought of her. It was always about her. Which exactly why she's going to snap in three.. two.. one..

"John!" Right of que, her voice squeaked as it went higher than it probably should have. I had to hold back from coughing a laugh. "I can't believe you are okay with her coming in here like the criminal she is, and ruining our lives again."

Matty's eyes narrowed in, but he didn't get a chance to speak up. "The conversation is over, Cynthia." John demanded, then shifted his eyes over to me. "Okay? This is your second chance."

With that, he dropped his arms which remained tense and crossed over his chest the entire time. I watched as he sighed and pushed the events that just took place to the back of his mind and stalked out of the room and up the stairs. Cynthia remained galring at me for a second or two before she followed him, probably to protest.

Matty watched them as well, loosening up a little as they both left, leaving us alone. "What was that about, Jess?" He asked curiously as he opened a bag of chips from the counter and shoved a handfull in his mouth.

"Detention." I said blandly.

His eyes widened. "You got a detention already?"

"Let me guess, your dissapointed in me too. I'm a disgrace to the family, I'm just like my mother, I don't belong here.." I trailed off.

"What?" He shot back, "No. Jess, I would never say that."

I rolled my eyes up as I took in a deep breath. "Why not, that's what everyone else thinks." I sighed, pushing off the island counter and exiting the kitchen as well to head up to my room. Clearly the only place I could get any peace and quiet.

"Jessalyn, wait." He demanded, making me pause and turn back to him. His mouth flung open and I was sure he didn't know what to say. I could see him thinking when the door shot open.

Naturally, I expected it to be Carson but it wasn't. At the door stood a tall blonde guy. He had a tan complexion and blue eyes that matched mine. His eyes landed on me and he smiled warmly. Matty walked past me and up to the guy in our door way.

"Jess this is Stuart. Stuart, my sister Jessalyn." Matty introduced us.

"Hey" He greeted stepping forward and stretching out his hand for me to shake. "We were just going to hang out and watch a movie. You want to join us?" He offered, ever so kindly. Almost too kind..

I stared back at him for awhile, thinking of how Matty would sit next to me the entire time and attempt to finish out conversation between important parts of the film. "No, I'll pass." I told them before stomping up the stairs and into my bedroom.
