(Let's hope this doesn't flop)

The leaves that graced over the floor of the woods crunched underneath Ben's boots as he walked. He sighed heavily as he looked around, knowing he'd need to find both food and water soon since it was starting to get dark out.

Half of him wanted to power on through the night since he didn't sleep anyways, but he knew it was dangerous. With all the new weapons the Espheni have been pulling out, no telling what he'd run into.

As he was walking out towards a river, he heard an ear-piercing scream. He quickly turned his head in the direction and began running towards the commotion by instinct.

He saw a girl around his age struggling with a skitter as the second alien was clawing relentlessly on a younger girl as he became closer. Realizing that he wouldn't be able to get a clean shot, Ben pulled his knife out and knocked the skitter off of the girl, landing on top of it, and stabbing it in the mouth. He quickly pulled out his pistol and shot the other skitter twice.

He heard the older girl panting and turned to see her clutching her side. "Are you alright?" Ben asked quickly.

The girl ignored him as she crawled towards the younger one and cradled her face. She soon began sobbing as she realized the younger one was gone, her shoulders shaking violently.

Ben didn't know what he should do, so he simply began moving the dead skitters behind a tree, giving her a minute before he would her her bury the little girl.

As the older one was crying, he walked off as he saw a farm. Luckily, there was a shovel there and he quickly ran back to the two to see that they remained in the same position.

Ben started digging, thinking it was the right thing to do, and didn't worry about food or water or even shelter. He had wondered if they were sisters, or if they had somehow found each other in a messed up world but he knew he would want someone to do the same him. He couldn't think about losing Matt or any more of his family, the least he could was help her bury a loved one.

Once Ben was done digging the hole, he walked over to the two, making his footsteps obvious so he didn't scare her. He kneeled down and placed a hand shoulder on the older of the two. "What was her name?" He asked quietly, unsure of what else he should say.

"I don't know." She said quietly. Ben furrowed his eyebrows slightly before she continued talking. "She made me call her Seattle since that was where she was from. She said she didn't want to use names so we wouldn't get attached to each other in case the other died, but I obviously did anyways." She says, sounding emotionally drained.

"I'm sorry for your loss." Ben says, standing.

After her permission, Ben carried Seattle away and gently placed her in the whole he dug. He moved a few strands of hair from her face and got up.

The older and still nameless girl placed a small bouquet of flowers in Seattle's hand and one in her hair.

"Who are you?" She suddenly asked after a few moments of silence. "My name is Ben." He says softly, walking towards her and sat on the grass next to her.

"Thank you, Ben." She whispered and then sniffled. "No need to thank me." He shrugs.

"You saved my life and helped me bury her. Most wouldn't have bothered risking their life for a few strangers. I pretty much owe you my life." As the said the words, she sounded sad and monotonous. She had meant every word, but she didn't know how she would even continue without having a reason to fight for.

"What's your name?" Ben asked, curious.

"(Y/n)." He smiled.

"Well, (Y/n), we should probably get going. It'd getting dark out." He says and even though she knew she had every reason to believe that he was some psycho-cannibalistic freak, she trusted him.

Plus, he had nice eyes.

(did it flop? I don't think it did, at least not that much... anyways, I kind of imagined Rue as Seattle so yeah it brought back 2012 feels. I also am kind proud as to how I was able to dodge names and yet still use them...)

Happy thanksgiving (:
