What kind of a place was this? I mean, I understood that this was the city so things were a bit different than how things were done in the country, but this was ridiculous! This was almost like an arranged marriage, something that wasn’t really done now a days.
“Of course this isn’t a real marriage,” Yamato continued, “You just have to pretend to be my wife,”
“P-pretend?” I shook my head to clear it.
“Of course. What, did you think you were really marrying me? Believe me, I would never marry someone I didn’t know or wasn’t in love with,”
I wanted to scream that I felt the same way, but I was still speechless about this entire thing. If I had known that this was what Uncle wanted me to do…
“So I take that as a yes?” he smiled slightly, “Great. Now our fake marriage is established,”
“Wait a minute, I didn’t agree to anything!” I snapped.
“What?” he looked shocked, like he couldn’t believe that any woman would turn him down, “What don’t you like about it? Let me know if something’s bothering you,”
“What’s bothering me? How can you honestly ask me that with a straight face! There are too many things to name and I don’t know where to start! Besides, I can’t marry someone I just met!”
“I said it’s a fake marriage. In other words, we’re playing house,” he smiled slightly.
“Why would you want to pretend to me married?”
“What?”
“Tell me the reason why or I can’t make a decision either way,”
“Is it really that important?” he looked away.
“Of course! It’s of the utmost importance!”
“Explain it to her. Women like to understand the process of things,” Saeki nodded. I really just wanted to reach other and punch him.
“I guess I’ll tell you,” he sighed, straightening up in his seat, “A few months ago, I was hired as a science teacher at a private high school. It’s an all girl’s high school that’s historic and prestigious. They’re also very strict and won’t even allow their students to date. Teachers are usually female, the few male instructors they have must be married and they absolutely do not hire single men. So, to get hired for the job, I said I have a fiancé but we hadn’t gotten marred due to personal reasons. To put plainly, I lied during the interview and if they find out the truth I will be fired immediately,”
“Fired?” this school sounded crazy. I could understand them not wanting their students to date, mainly to ensure that they kept up with their studies, but to not allow the hiring of single men?
“And to make things worse, the vice-principal is starting to suspect me. He’s sniffing around and in order to get him off my trail I need a fake wife. That’s what I need you to help me with,”
There was nothing I could say. This was all too much for me and I honestly didn’t know if this was something I could help him with. I had been in a few serious relationships in my life, but to pretend to be someone’s wife?
“I’m sincerely asking for your help,” he bowed, but looked up into my eyes, “Will you be my wife?”
Everyone else in the room looked at me pleadingly. They all wanted help, but since I had picked Yamato I knew that now they wished for me to help him with his problem. I thought for a few moments, then spoke up.
