I was the first one to wake the first morning. It was just after sunrise, the sky still looking red, and I could hear the sounds of the city coming to life. Last night was… after all the time I’d spent here, I never imagined a night like that could happen. I laid on my side as I looked at Yamato, who was still sleeping soundly beside me.
He looked peaceful and relaxed, more relaxed than he looked since I got here. Reaching out, I moved a piece of hair out of his face. When he stirred, I drew it back, thinking I had woken him, but he snuggled deeper into the mattress and continued sleeping. After everything that happened last night, how were things between us going to be? Yamato had said and done so many things…. It was hard to see where things would go from here.
Deciding to clear my head a little, I climb out of bed slowly and got dressed. I still had to look through all my stuff and decide which things were going to stay and which things were going to go back into storage. Though it was sweet of Yamato to bring all these things where, some of them were my mother’s and though I was working through the feelings, I wasn’t ready to look at them quite yet. As I walked into the crowded living room, I sat in front of the first box and took a look inside.
Full of school books; I’m pretty sure those would be happy to stay in storage. The next few had some clothes that I picked through. Some I didn’t need to keep and could donate while others I knew I could still wear in this new city setting. With every box that I opened it seemed like another would appear out of nowhere. Had I really put all this stuff away?
“What’re you doing?”
Looking back, I saw a sleepy looking Yamato leaning against the doorway. He looked confused but a little bit worried as well.
“Just going through my stuff to see what things I want to keep and what I want to send back to storage,” I turned back to the box I was currently working on.
I could hear him walking passed the living room and into the kitchen, then the sound of the coffee maker kicking on. After a few minutes and two more boxes, he appeared next to me holding two cups of coffee.
“What time did you wake up?” he asked, placing his cup on the table and diving into a box.
“Not too long ago,” I shrugged, “I didn’t want to wake you,”
“Thanks for that,” he stretched a bit, “I was in need of some good sleep,”
“Well if that were the case-” I stopped myself short, getting ready to mention what had happened last night, but the moment I started thinking about it my face began to burn.
“What were you saying?” he looked into my face.
“N-nothing,”
“You ok? You looked kind of red,” he reached to put his hand on my forehead.
“I’m fine,” I pushed it back, “just forget I said anything,”
Looking away, I started looking in boxes again. I wanted to get this done sooner rather than later, but I also wanted to get through as many as possible to make sure all of mom’s stuff stayed put.
“Hey, who’s this?” I heard Yamato ask from across the room.
Looking up, I saw that he was staring at a large picture frame. Getting up, I went to stand behind him and my breath caught in my throat. In his hand was a picture of my mother. Moving him out of the way, I searched the box he was working on and saw that it was the very box I was trying to avoid. Snatching the picture out of his hand, I placed it back into the box and held down the flaps with my hands. We were quiet, but after a bit Yamato put a hand on my back.
