            “Do non-recyclables go here?”

            “Yeah,” Yamato nodded.

It had been a few days since the ball game and my run in with Takuto. I was relieved when Yamato didn’t try to ask me about what he was talking about, but I wasn’t sure if he actually heard any of it. I mean, he was sleep, wasn’t he?

I went to take the trash out with him as he was leaving for work. Since he normally did it I thought I would help out.

“I think I’ll be off early today,” he smiled at me.

            “Oh, that’s good,”

“Did you want to go to Kuni’s bar or…?”

We chatted a bit as we walked back from the dumpster, but right when we stepped out of the front gate, Yuri was standing there.

“Mr. Kogami,” she smiled as she tilted her head to the side.

“Onodera!” Yamato seemed surprised to see her.

I was just as surprised as he was. I still hadn’t asked him about her and it didn’t help my suspicion with her showing up at our apartment complex out of the blue. Every time I thought about asking him, something always came up.

“What are you doing here so early in the morning?” he continued.

“I changed my route after I was groped,” she started to pout, “I’m scared of walking to school by myself. Can I go to school with you, Mr. Kogami?”

            “Scared? It’s broad daylight,”

“Aw, c’mon. Do it for your cute student. Can’t you be my bodyguard?”

My blood began to boil. She was seriously going to try to play this in front of me? She was really asking for it, this one.

Yamato was quiet for a moment, then sighed.

            “Alright, but just for today,”

“Cool!” she smiled widely. Glancing over at me, she had a victorious expression on her face, as if proving what she had said on the phone before, “I’m going to borrow your husband,” she snaked her arm around his.

“Don’t like your arms with mine,” he complained, but he didn’t seem to be upset about it.

Standing there, I knew that there was nothing I could do. I knew that I couldn’t allow Yuri to get the upper hand; I had to show her that I was going to fight back. Taking a deep breath, I smiled widely.

“Have a nice day,” I said to Yamato.

“See you later,” he smiled back, but he continued to look at me like he wanted to say something else.

But before he could say anything, Yuri tugged on his arm.

“Mr. Kogami, let’s go,” they started walking, “Can you tell me what’s gonna be on today’s test?”

            “Of course not,”

I stood there watching them walk into the distance side by side. Yamato didn’t even try to brush Yuri’s arm off. I figured it was just because it was good to be liked by his students, but I couldn’t shake the icky feeling that was left behind. I knew that it was because Yuri felt more than a normal student-teacher relationship with Yamato; even though he had me as a wife.
