A few days had passed since the day I went to Yamato’s school. Since there wasn’t any school, Yamato and I decided to go the shopping district to buy ingredients for dinner that night. I was still feeling a bit uneasy from my run in with Yuri and that ring issue was constantly at the back of my mind. How could we have over looked something so simple, but so important?
“What are you going to make tonight, Pouty?” Yamato smiled, pulling me out of my thinking.
“Me?”
“I don’t mind making dinner, but I’d like to eat something that my lovely wife made too,” he smiled jokingly.
“My lovely wife…” I repeated what he said to myself.
“I can tell the vice-principal, ‘my wife made such-and-such last night’. I want to eat something or my act won’t be realistic,”
“You want to go for reality,” I nodded, “I see,”
“That’s right! You’re finally getting it. My students teased me after you left. They said, ‘aw, you’re cute together!’”
“The ones who were surrounding you?” I asked with curiosity.
“They believed you’re my wife. Our plan worked!” he laughed lightheartedly.
“Well, I’m not sure all your students believed that,” I thought of Yuri again. I could tell that she was very fond of Yamato, but to say that we weren’t married… had she said that out of jealousy, or did she know something more?
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Yamato asked as he looked into my eyes. I guess he hadn’t heard what I said.
“Nothing,” I shook my head, “just thinking is all,”
I couldn’t tell Yamato what Yuri said. It would only dampen his mood and make him worry more than he had to.
“Well did you decide what you’re going to make tonight?”
“How about Japanese-style Salisbury steak?”
“Perfect!” he smiled, “I love Japanese-style food. You’re starting to understand my tastes,”
“It’s not hard once you live with someone,” I shrugged.
“Ha! You’re being cocky. We’ve only lived together for a week,”
He was right. Though it had only been a week, I felt so much more relaxed now than I had the first day arrived. I wasn’t sitting in the apartment with him in an awkward silent and I was beginning to talk to him like I would a close friend. I guess it made a big difference living in the same space as someone.
“Have you lived with anyone before?” he asked.
“I have,” I admitted, “just once and it didn’t last long. How about you, Kogami?”
“I had someone force herself here,” he shrugged, “But I kicked her out because she was getting annoying,”
“Annoying, huh?”
“Time you spend at home is important. You don’t want others to disrupt your lifestyle,”
“Then I guess I must have one foot out the door then. Aren’t I disrupting your lifestyle?”
