"So your names Mae?" He asked, a smirk still played onto his face.

"Oh yeah, I forgot to introduce myself. Well, yeah. I'm Mae."

"So, are you going to stay for New Years?" Mae asked.

Mae's parents bought the whole 'he's a friend from school' story even though Mae rarely ever invites over any friends, let alone any guys. And because it is so rare they even invited this stranger to spend the rest of winter break with them.

"No, probably not," he said. "It would be dangerous for you and your family."

They were up in her room. Mae was playing with her pet ferret, Maniac and Niall was sitting on the open windowsill watching her intently.

"Since when does a vampire prince care squat about a pathetic little human girl like me and my family?" She wasn't trying to be rude, she was just curious.

"You make me seem like such a monster." Niall pointed out, although he wasn't offended.

"Last time I checked, creatures of the night that mercilessly drain the blood from other creatures is a definition of the word 'monsters'."

"Well in my defense, we 'monsters' have thoughts and feelings too and we do it in order to survive. No one ever said we liked doing it."

"Do you like doing it?"

"Some of us do-"

"HA! SEE."

"-but some of us don't. You humans are the hardest prey, but you are the most filling and delectable ones as well."

"Gee, I sure do feel honored and safe being told that I'm delicious right in the presence of vampire royalty." Mae said sarcastically.

Niall laughed. "No worries. I won't eat you."

"Of course you won't. Vampires don't eat humans, they just suck the blood out of them."

Niall smirked and continued to watch Mae play with Maniac.

After a long pause of silence Mae asked, "So if you're not going to kill me or my parents why is it dangerous for us to have you here?"

"I have been thinking and I have come to realize that my decision to runaway, although amusing and adventurous, was foolish and idiotic and I plan to return to the palace."

"Why wait if you can just go now then?"

"Mae, are all humans as curious as you?"

"Just the interesting ones."

Niall laughed again. "If you ask me, all of you humans are interesting, but to answer your question, I wish to wait so that I may learn a bit more about you humans."

"I have a history textbook if you want it. My teacher won't be so pleased but it would mean less homework for me so you can take it."

"I appreciate the offer, but I must decline."

"So are you going to answer my question?"

"Mae, you are going to have to be a little more specific."

"if you're not going to kill me or my parents why is it dangerous for us to have you here?"

Niall sighed. He had been trying to avoid answering that one. "Humans celebrate the coming and beginning of a new year on New Years. Correct?"

"Yes."

"Well . . . How do I put this? May we just say that on New Years vampires celebrate too, but for a different reason, and in a different kind of way."
