"It's just . . . Well, look at you. You're covered in blood and are on the verge of fainting and you're laughing as if nothing just happened."

Mae shrugged. "What can I say? I'm strange."

Niall just smiled. A moment later, she was fast asleep.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Niall had gotten someone he could trust to clean Mae up and now she was resting peacefully in his bedroom. Niall was sitting next to her, watching her with great amusement and curiosity as she slept. He couldn't help but smile at her, for he thought that she looked rather adorable as she slept.
She was sleeping laying on her side, with her arms pulled close to her body so that it looked like she was giving herself a hug. Her straight hair was now slightly wavy from being braided earlier, and it was not styled in any way, so nothing kept it from falling loose over her face.
Yet, at the same time he watched her with great curiosity for she still maintained that unearthly stealthy quietness that she had the night they had met. She was as quiet as she was then and if not for the fact that he already knew that she was there, he would never have known she was, because for some reason even though her scent was there, it at the same time seemed to be elsewhere as well. Niall wondered, how, exactly, this was possible. She was HUMAN after all.
Niall pulled another small loose lock of hair from her face. He pushed it behind her ear and chuckled quietly to himself as it just came loose again.
Then sudden,y, there was a loud knock at the door. With one last glance at Mae to make sure she was still asleep, Niall went and opened the door. It was Liam Payne, one of Niall's closest and oldest friends.
"Liam!" Niall exclaimed happily, but not loudly as he didn't want to wake Mae up. "What brings you here?" He asked, stepping into the hallway with Liam.
"I'm afraid I bring bad news, Niall," he said seriously.
Niall smile quickly faded into a frown. "What is it?"
"Okay, so when I heard about what happened, I decided I'd try to make sense of what happened, because . . . well, it didn't exactly make sense. You know?"
Without waiting for a response Liam continued. "So I got the girls files and the files of the report and read them both. But what doesn't make sense is that the report said that the girl had red eyes and I even asked the guards that witnessed it and they said she did, but her files say that she's a NYMPH. And nymphs never have red eyes! Vampires do, but nymphs? Never!"
Niall nodded, urging his friend to continue.
"I had the guards to bring her to me for questioning, but whenever I tried to ask her something she wouldn't answer. She just sassed me or said something rude. This really caught me off guard because of all of my existence -which you know has been a very long one- I have never ever met or even heard of a nymph being so rude! I told them to just take her away but she started struggling and fighting when they grabbed her more harshly than she liked. And that's when I saw it. On the back of her neck. 'Cypress'."
That's when Niall froze.
"Imprinted in small neat cursive on the back of her neck, right under the hairline." Liam finished. He waited quietly for Niall's response.
Niall's eyebrows furrowed slightly as millions of thoughts began to run amuck through his mind. But then he remembered that Liam was still there so he pushed them aside and turned to his friend.
"Thank you, Liam," he politely said quietly.
He opened the door to his bedroom and took a step inside but before he could close the door, Liam stopped him.
"Niall."
Niall turned. Liam was already ten feet away.
"They're back."
Right then, Mae screamed.
"Mae!" Niall yelled. He ran vampire speed to her side and Liam was not far behind.
She was sitting up in bed now, her hands covering her sobbing face.
"Mae! Mae what's wrong?" Niall asked desperately. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer to him. She buried her face in his chest as she continued to cry.
"I-it was horrible!" Came out her muffled response.
"What was horrible?" Niall asked more calmly as he started to rub her back.
"Th-the dream! It-It was-It was horrible! Absolutely horrible!" She cried.
"What happened? Tell me what happened."
Mae pulled away from him and he saw that her normally confident dark blue eyes were wild with fear from the dream.
"Tell us what happened, Mae," Liam persisted gently.
Mae opened her mouth to say something, but then after a moment with it hanging open she closed it. She stopped crying and instead furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. The fear then quickly faded from her eyes.
"Mae?" Niall asked, concerned. "Are you alright?"
Mae blinked and looked at him, a deep confusion written all over her face.
"I-I can't remember," she said slowly.
Niall and Liam exchanged glances.
"You can't remember anything? Anything at all?" Liam asked.
"No, I- It was all so clear. . . But now, I can't remember . . ."
"Nothing?" Liam asked, one last time.
Mae shut her eyes tightly and shook her head. "No," she said. Then she suddenly became very upset again. "All I remember is being scared-very scared and alone and hurt and-and"
"Shhh," Niall soothed, pulling her into another hug. He could sense the fear in her returning.
"Niall." Liam said simply.
Niall turned, looked at his eyes and instantly read the message that they gave. He studied Liam's full brown eyes for a long moment and knew that his old friend was right. Liam was always right.
Niall looked at down at Mae in his arms. She was in a world of her own at the moment, still probably weak from earlier. He gently caressed the side of her face with his thumb and sighed.
"Alright, Liam," he said, looking up at his friend. "Warn the others. You know who I mean, correct?"
Liam nodded. "What should I tell them?" He asked.
"Warn them. Tell them to prepare themselves."
"Should I tell them that THEY are back?"
"Yes. Tell them that the Cypress Family has returned."
Liam nodded again and in vampire speed, left the room, leaving Niall with his now fiancé asleep in his arms.
Niall held Mae closely against his chest and rested his chin on her head.
"I know what they want," he said into her hair. "But I won't let them have it. I won't let them take you. I promise."
