"So um . . .is there anything else I need to know?" Mae asked after no one had said anything for a few minutes. She flipped her bangs out if her face and looked up at Niall again.

"There is one thing, yes," he replied.

Mae sat up a bit straighter, for she hadn't expected him to actually have something else that he needed to say.

"We're engaged."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She simply furrowed her eyebrows and blinked rapidly a few times.
"What?"
"We're engaged," he repeated.
"We -as in you and I- are engaged? Like fiancé and a long white dress and getting married- engaged?"
He nodded.
She turned away from him with her mouth slightly agape and tried to think of something to say. But no response came out. She was too shocked to respond.
"H-how?" She finally squeaked.
Little did she know that finding out that she was engaged was nothing compared to what she would discover within the next few weeks.
"I said that I would save you. And I did."
With her right hand loosely enclosed in a fist, her thumb rested on her bottom lip. Her blue eyes although wet were not teary and they showed something. It showed something deeper, a more real undepictable emotion that she had never really had to show, let alone feel before.
Mae looked at Niall. And for first time since she met him she saw him for what and who he really was.
A king. A vampire king.
The vampire king.
But not just that.
She saw someone who was scared, and she saw someone who was alone. She saw someone who was lost. She saw someone who felt stuck.
She saw in his eyes that he loved her and they told her that he had loved her since they had met. She saw that -to him- she had saved him.
But from what, she didn't understand.
'I said that I would save you. And I did.'
Those words echoed in her mind.
"You said that you'd save me. You didn't say anything about getting engaged," she said quietly.
She felt hurt, betrayed.
Mae was a very outgoing person, but she was also a very independent person. She never had very many friends.
So when she found out that Niall had lied to her and that he hadn't told her the whole truth, it seriously hurt her.
Niall lowered his head.
"Nothing in life is free."
Mae's sadness froze for a moment before firing up into a silent anger.
He was talking to the wrong girl about freedom.
By stating that, Niall was basically saying that she had to give up her freedom, that complete ability to choose and decide for herself, and in return be given life.
Mae, her parents, her grandparents, her great grandparents were all born and raised in the United States. Freedom was in her blood. It was a part of her.
And now it was being taken from her in exchange for her life.
But how can she say she's alive when freedom is her life?
Take her freedom away and you're taking her life away. And Niall was doing just that.
But before she could yell at him, before she could vent her anger, before she could rant about how freedom and life work for her, before anything could happen, she realized something.
"You're dead . . ."
Niall looked up at her with sad watercolor painted eyes.
"You don't even know what freedom is like . . . Do you?" She realized.
"When you're born dead, your fate is decided for you and there is no such thing as freedom," he said.
No such thing as freedom.
Mae couldn't quite grasp that.
"That still doesn't give you the right to take it away from someone else," she said, crossing her arms. She crossed her arms more because she was cold then because she was mad.
"When you're the king of the world you have the right to do whatever you want." Liam finally interjected. But he did, only because it had to be said, but he knew Niall wouldn't say it.
"You mean, king of all vampires," Mae corrected.
There was an awkward silence as Liam and Niall shared glances to one another. Mae caught on.
"What?" She asked looking back and forth between the two.
They didn't say anything.
"Oh my god," she breathed. "You weren't exaggerating when you said that vampires were going to take over the world."
A tear finally slid down her cheek.
"But what about my family?" She whispered, her voice cracking.
"We'll find out soon enough," Liam said.
"What do you mean 'We'll find out soon enough'? You've only been in power for like a day."
Niall and Liam exchanged uneasy glances again.
"Mae, when I bit you on New Years, I accidentally bit you too hard and . . ."
"And what?" She asked hesitantly.
" . . . And you were kind of out for six months . . ."
Mae brushed her loose bangs behind her ear and sighed sadly.
"What else have you been hiding from me?"
The sound of betrayal in her voice broke his dead heart.
He didn't have it in him to say anything else.
"Only the things that he was scared would make you see him differently," Liam responded.
"Can't you just tell me now and get it over with?" Mae sighed.
"Some things are better left not said," Niall whispered.
If it hadn't been dead silent in there, Mae would never have heard and the only reason Liam heard it was because of his werewolf hearing.
"And some things are better left not done," she intercepted almost silently.
