Although I didn't know what was happening, I had never felt so happy. Except of course when I was with Jared. The thing about this type of happiness was that I felt free. For the first time in ages, I felt happy, as though nothing and no one could stop me.

I could hear the shouts and cries in the background but they just seemed so far away. My thoughts wouldn't and couldn't reach them. I was way too excited about this new found happiness.

But then I realised what had happened. How could I be so stupid?

Everything was like I was looking through a camera lens. It wasn't right at all but at the same time it felt so amazing to be running around like it. It wasn't human.
I wasn't human. Not any more at least. No, I was a wolf.

I wasn't sure how it happened. One moment I was just Avery, a random human girl but the next, I was a breathtaking she-wolf!

"Ah, so you learnt to shift did you? Smart girl, you are." Commented a familiar voice. Pepper spray man!

What the hell was he doing, following me?

I turned around to see him standing there with a smirk plastered on his face. Damn, I wanted to wipe it off!

A vicious growl escaped my mouth and his smirk vanished. Job done. I didn't like him. I could feel my fur on my back raise as I showed my hate towards him and he stepped back a little.

"You know, I'm actually trying to help you, kid. You're not making this easy!" He grunted at me, rolling his eyes a little.

Help? Why would he help me? Maybe he was trying to trick me...

"You have a very pretty wolf you know. Has she introduced herself yet?" He questioned.

Well that was unexpected. Wolf? I thought the wolf was me! Apparently there was someone using my body as well! As if I'm going to let that happen. People must think I'm stupid or weak. Or both!

"Well, we'd better get going. I'm taking you back to Jared, his orders, Princess, you coming or what?" He teased, his smirk still planted on his face.

I growled a little in frustration at him and he laughed. It really wasn't a time to be laughing. Plus, I still didn't trust him. He was a stranger; a strong one at that. What could I, a teenage girl, do to him if he tried anything?

"I know you don't trust me. It's fine, I respect that. The problem is though, Jared told me to lead you home..." His voice trailed off as I pricked my ears.

Footsteps.

I quickly snapped a warning at the man in front of me before tackling him to the ground.

I looked up again to see a huge dark brown wolf, about double my wolf's height, snarling at me. I jumped back in fear but remembered the man I had saved. He was standing behind me, myself being a shield.

I didn't have time to think before the bad wolf lunged at me. Quickly, I dropped to the ground so I was practically underneath him. That was when I jumped up and bit into him.

I heard a yelp of pain before I quickly got up again. The wolf was on the ground, trying to stand up even though there was a clear sign of blood coming from his wound. He was from Gregory's pack so I felt no sympathy for him. Horrible rogue.

"Avery, lets go!" Yelled the man, pushing me forward as we both started to run from the scene.

I was a lot faster then the man, whose name I still didn't know. I'd better ask him when we actually had time to pause. He needed to speed up a lot if we wanted to outrun some of Gregory's pack members. There were a lot of fast wolves in his pack that could catch us at this rate.

"Go ahead, Avery. I'm slowing you down. You need to get there," he panted and rested his hands on his legs.

I stopped running and turned to look at him. If I left him, the rogues would surely catch him. They knew his scent and would kill him straight away! No way was I going to leave him behind. Even if I didn't know him that well, his death would be my fault and I didn't want that on my conscience.

Furiously, I shook my head. He smirked at me and ruffled the fur on my head. Again, I looked into his eyes and saw sadness. He knew what was coming to him. Rogues would catch him.

"Maybe you're not so smart, are you?" He asked out loud.

I tilted my head at him and he smiled sadly. It broke my heart.

"Kid, you've got to run. They'll kill us both if you stay here any longer." He shook his head, "I don't want you to die just because you were trying to help me."

I let out a long whine at him and sat down. When I sat down, I was still very tall compared to him. I was around where his shoulders were.

That's when it hit me.

I bowed down on the floor in front of him so my back was there for him to climb on. He shook his head in shock at me. I just nudged his leg for him to hurry up.

Before getting on, he patted my back gently. Then, he was on my back. I felt proud to be carrying someone. As though I were protecting them.

I rose up. When I stood, I was probably about the same height as an average man. I still wasn't fully grown so I wasn't very strong. I could still manage to carry him though. I had to.

I started to walk forward and then I sped up so he wouldn't suddenly fall off my back. He held on tight but it didn't hurt me in the least. I had to get away from the rogues. That was my main mission.
