Finally we were getting back-up. It had been a long time since that had happened. We were closer than ever to our last destination.
Jared, hold on. We're coming!
Isla barked in delight but it soon went away as some rogues caught up with us. They wore crazed expressions on their faces as they panted in desperation. One of them snapped his jaws at me and all I saw were razor sharp teeth, inches from my face. It was horrifying to think that if it had reached me, my face would have been bitten off.
"Keep running!"
I did what he said and forced my legs to run faster. My breaths were getting heavier. By that time, I was panting. I could go fast for a little while but I didn't have much stamina.
Come on, we can do this!
I let out a small sigh. These rogues were going to catch us if we didn't get away soon enough.
Swiftly, I dodged around a tree just as he slid off my back. I realised what was happening. He was letting me get away. But of course, he was stupid if he thought I'd go with that idea.
I spun around to face him and he stood there, smiling at me sadly. I let out a whine and nodded my head in the other direction, hoping he'd come with me. Frantically he shook his head. He wasn't coming.
"Run Avery. Just run and don't look back."
I won't let you go.
He rolled his eyes at me but then turned round. I let out a high pitched bark but it was ignored.
"Jared told me to get you to him safely. Give him my apologies for not escorting you the whole way."
That was that. He ran off, almost falling down because of his injured leg. Quickly, I shifted back to my human form and shouted after him.
"Wait, please!" Tears formed in the corners of my eyes as I ran.
He stopped for a second and I grabbed hold of him.
"Avery-"
I cut him off by wrapping my arms round him. I started crying into his jacket and he hugged me back.
"Please don't go," I sobbed.
He sighed and gently pushed me out the way. Calmly, he gave me a little nod and limped off.
I just stood there. Hopeless as always. It was all I could do. Nothing I did would help him. Tears were still streaming down my face as I turned round to walk away.
I bumped into a large object. Well, it was actually a guy but I did think it was an object until I looked up to see a concerned looking man peering down at me.
"Are you Avery?" He questioned.
I nodded my head, unsure of what to do. He just scrutinised me before gesturing for me to go with him.
"Uh, my friend is back there and he needs help. Can we please go back?" I said timidly.
"Some other pack members have gone back there. They'll help him."
I let out a shaky sigh. At least he'd get some help.
We started walking towards the end of our journey. It was weird to think I'd travelled so far to get there at that moment. So much had been sacrificed. People had got hurt and killed because of me. Hopefully, this would be the end of all that.
"Ah, Carlos. You got her back!" I heard a familiar voice.
Jared!
He was jogging towards us, a huge grin on his face. He looked like a Cheshire Cat. Once he was next to us, he gave Carlos' hand a quick shake and then gave me a giant bear hug. Or, wolf hug I guess.
"Jared..." I sighed into his shoulder.
He pulled away, still smiling and looked me up and down.
"Lets get you cleaned up Avery. After that, I'll show you where you'll be staying." He said, pulling me away.
We went inside a giant house with a lot of people inside. Mostly women and children. I looked around, bewildered. I was guessing it was the pack house.
"In here is Margaret. She'll get you cleaned up, won't you Margaret? She's had a long journey as you can probably tell." He explained," I'll be back later."
Margaret nodded. She was fairly old, around her late fifties. Her silvery hair was tied back and had a hairnet around it. Around her eyes were little crinkles, probably from smiling a lot. They were also grey, but still had a little bright spark in them around the pupil.
"Ah, you're the little dear that Jared told me about. Lets get you cleaned up. Gotta look nice for him, right honey?" She gave me a little wink at the end and I giggled like a little girl.
It took about an hour but in the end, my hair was done beautifully and I had new gorgeous clothes. Obviously I had got a hot bath as well. It was luxurious.
In front of Margaret, I did a twirl and she gave a little applaud, laughing. Already I liked this woman.
We both froze and smirked at each other when Jared knocked on the door.
"Go get 'em!" She shoved me out the door and I fell into Jared.
"Um, lets go. I'll show you your room then." He said, blushing a little. I was sure I felt little electric sparks on my arms. Maybe it was just my mind playing tricks on me.
Surprisingly, my room wasn't in the pack house. It was in Jared's house. His parents also lived there but when Jared's position changed to alpha, they'd move out.
"Hey Avery? I have some news about the man who brought you here..." He said quietly. I nodded and waited for him to continue. "I'm sorry..."
I stepped back a little. No... Did he mean that he was dead? He couldn't be! Not a chance.
"We tried to save him, Avery, of course we did but... He stopped breathing in the hospital. There was nothing else we could do."
Again, I started crying. No matter what I did, people always seemed to leave me. It was so unfair. The world was unfair. They were all good people. None of them deserved that fate!
"His name was Joel Richardson. Such a good man. He was one of my father's best men."
I nodded but still looked at the ground. If only I wasn't there. Joel would still be alive...
I went to my bed and lied down, crying into my pillow. Jared had decided to leave me be as he had business to attend to involving the rogues.
That night, all those people that had died were in my dreams. Janice, Celia and Joel... All of them could still have a chance to live if it wasn't for me.
Janice looked at me, full of anger. She said nothing, just looked at me, then walking away into the distance.
Then Celia was a short distance away from me. One second she was there, then there were wolves surrounding here, tearing her apart.
"Avery! Why didn't you save me?" Her ghostly voice rang out in the air.
"I'm sorry! I just couldn't!" I cried out to her.Suddenly she was in front of me. But this wasn't Celia. It was a lifeless version of her with dead white eyes and chunks of flesh missing. One of her arms had been ripped off, all that was left was down to the elbow.
"Help me Avery!" She screamed. The hideous version of her crumbled to dust in front of me. All that was left was Joel.
He looked at me, sadness showing in his eyes. Slowly he shook his head. I stepped towards him but he got further away each time I got closer.
"Joel-" I started.
He just turned away from me. That's what hurt the most. Joel walked away and into some random white light.
All of them were gone and I was left alone. I understood why they hated me. It was my fault after all.
Nobody wants to die too fast.
