Zoe's POV:
I sat on the sofa, anxiously awaiting the arrival of Alfie's family. Today we were telling them that we were adopting. We wanted to wait until everything was, somewhat, official. Obviously we haven't signed any adoption papers yet, and we've only known Erin and Alexis for a month, but I really feel like this could be it. "How you feeling?" Alfie asked, plopping himself down next to me. "I'm anxious, but excited." I answered. "Me too. I know they'll be excited, but I'm worried they're gonna think it's too soon after Evelyn..." I nodded, "I know. But we know we're ready and they'll see that we are. Even if it's not today.
DingDong. Alfie jumped up to answer the door. Moments later, his mum, Amanda, and Dad, Nick, came through into the living room. I stood up to greet them, hugging them tight. Ten minutes later Poppy and Sean arrived, and they were all sat nervously, waiting to hear our big news. "So," Alfie said, standing up in front of them and gently pulling me up next to him, "we have something big to tell you." Poppy jokingly groaned, "Yes, yes, we know that already. Just tell us what it is!" He laughed and continued on, "At the beginning of last month, me and Zoe got to talking about everything that's happened this year with Evelyn, and we decided that we wanted to give it another go at being parents again..."
"You're pregnant?" Amanda asked, with a mix of shock and excitement in her voice. "Nooooo!" I exclaimed, giggling. They all looked at us confused. " We felt that it was too soon to put Zoe's body through pregnancy again. Plus, we knew we'd spend the whole time worrying about the baby, which is too much stress for us right now." Alfie told them. "Sooooo, what are you trying to say?" Sean asked. I looked at Alfie and smirked, "We're going to adopt!" They all sat shocked for a second, before jumping up to hug and congratulate us. "That's amazing!" Poppy exclaimed, hugging me tight.
After we'd all settled down and were sat back on the sofas, we began to explain a bit more to them. "So what do you have to do now? Do you have to call up places or?" Nick asked. "Well, actually, we've already done all of that." I said, "We've had a background check, and found a foster home which looks after children without families whilst also actively trying to find someone to adopt them." They all nodded. "When are you going to go and meet all the kids?" Alfie and I smirked at each other. "We actually already have... We met with all the children living there, and did some activities and got to know them all. And we met the most amazing girls, that we think we're going to adopt!"
Poppy's mouth hanged open. "Did you say girls? As in more than one?" I started to laugh, "Their names are Erin and Alexis and they're fourteen years old." Alfie replied, "We're adopting twins!" The four of them sat silent for a moment, taken aback. "Twins? Are you sure you can handle them both?" Amanda questioned with evident concern. Alfie wrapped his arm around me and we smiled to each other, knowing that we could do this. "We 100% can." I replied, "Erin and Alexis are the most amazing kids I've ever met. They're sweet and kind and so, so brave. They've had a horrible start in life and we're ready to give them their happily ever after. We're ready to be their parents."
For a while we sat talking, answering all of their questions. With each passing moment I felt myself become more and more excited about the prospect of finally becoming a mum. I'd waited so, so long for this. A happy tear slid down my face as everyone excitedly discussed the new family members, and my smile grew bigger. I was so happy and grateful for this. "So, when do we get to meet them?" Poppy asked. "Well, we've only seen them a few times ourselves, so it might not be for a while. But we're hoping to have them over for new years eve." Alfie answered. Butterflies shot through my stomach. My excitement was uncontrollable. "I can't wait." I grinned, wrapping my arms around Alfie.
