Things were dead and I didn’t mean at the funeral. Nobody spoke a word in the car; Mollie played with Nathan’s hand whenever he placed it on the clutch. I felt the anger bubble up inside me. It wasn’t fair. I loved him more than she did. Why couldn’t he see that she was only with him for the fame and fortune? Two years down the line, she’ll probably be pregnant with his child but plotting to spilt from him just to get his money. I wanted to scream at the top of my voice and warn him off, but I know how he’d take it. I’d end up ruining our friendship.
‘I don’t like it’ I mumbled as he pulled up outside the church. Nathan turned and looked at me in sympathy. ‘You don’t have to get out if you don’t want. I guess you can stay in the car if you feel happier’ he offered. ‘Nathan, what do you mean? She has to go in. It’s her mother’s funeral. She has no choice in the matter. Her mother is being buried whether she likes it or not’ Mollie spat. Nathan didn’t divert his eyes from mine. ‘Molls, wait for us inside please’ he ushered. She huffed and puffed before getting out. As she walked up the path, she would occasionally look back with daggers in her eyes. ‘Don’t take any notice of her. She’s just jealous of the friendship we have’ he whispered. A friendship was all we were ever going to have and Nathan just proved that, much to my hearts discontent.
‘I’ll stay here with you’ he whispered. He left his seat in the front before joining me in the back via the back door. I felt his arm drift around my shoulder like we were two teenagers on a first date in the cinema. I watched his facial expressions from the rear view mirror. Little tear drops lay lonely on the cusp of his eyes, ready to drop. I could tell that he was trying to hold it all in. ‘It’s okay to cry Nathan’ I whispered. He briefly shook his head. ‘No it’s not Frey. I’ve messed up’ he replied. He sighed before looking deep into my eyes. ‘I’m sorry for doing this to you Frey’ he whispered. ‘Are you going to tell me that you’ve killed a man Sykes?’ I asked sarcastically. ‘Yeah, I am. It was an accident though Frey. Tom was really getting on my nerves. I couldn’t take it anymore. There were more stairs than I thought’ he shrugged. He sighed again. ‘I love you Frey’ he mumbled. ‘No you don’t you love Mollie!’ I exclaimed shaking my head frantically. ‘No I don’t. It’s been you all along Freya. It was always you. I broke up with her in the first place because I loved you. I never even liked her’ he admitted. I broke free from his hold. ‘So you mean, for the past God knows how long, I’ve been watching you, like some love sick puppy, play happy families with her, while all along, you’ve been acting? Why didn’t you tell me earlier? Do you know how hard it is to watch the man you love live his life with your best friend? In the words of Beyoncé, if you liked it, then you should have put a ring on it’ I spat before leaving the car.
I didn’t know what came over me, but as I left the car, embarrassment washed over me. I was pretty sure that he was going to watch my every move, so I walked as fast as possible. Rain began to trickle from the biggest cloud above my head, making my pedestrian journey even worse. The little red micra started up behind me. He had just passed his driving test. When I found out, I was like a prous mother. It grew closer to me, the solitary figure in the deserted Gloucester countryside, at a crawling speed. I regretted not bringing a jacket.
‘Frey, if you want, I’ll put a ring on it but for the moment it’ll have to be the haribo ring’ Nathan called rolling down his window. . I could tell by the sound of his voice that he had been crying even more. I ignored him and kept walking. ‘Freya please. I’ll stop this car and get down on all fours to apologise if I have to. I’m sorry Frey. I was scared….’ ‘Scared? Of what?’ I spat. True enough he had been crying. His eyes were red and puffy. They glistened even more than normal. ‘I was scared you’d turn me down. You’re beautiful Freya. Why would you want to date a loser like me? What have I got to offer you that other guys don’t? Nothing. They have more than I do. I wanted you to find love with someone popular, cool and handsome. I’m none of those’ he mumbled. As I continued walking, his car stopped. ‘I’m going home. If you change your mind and decide you want to marry me, then you know where I am’ he sighed. The poor boy had no expectations for himself.
As the car began to drive in the opposite direction, I turned and ran. ‘Nathan wait!’ The car came to an abrupt halt smack bang in the middle of the road. Luckily for him, there were no other cars on the road. He reversed slowly until the car and I were level. The passenger’s side window was no longer a barrier between us after being rolled down. ‘Nath, I think you’re amazing. Maybe marriage isn’t on the cards right now, but maybe a lift home is?’ I asked. ‘Get in quickly before you get pneumonia’ he smiled. I sat into the car with pleasure. There was a sense of freedom now that everything was out in the open. It felt good.
‘Frey, before we go, there is something I need to give you’ he said. ‘A haribo ring? I’m quite hungry!’ I announced. He shook his head. He searched his back pocket. ‘I found this letter at your house when I was cleaning the other day. I think you should read it right away’ he sighed. He handed me the open envelope, containing the letter he spoke about. I ripped it out of the envelope and unfolded it.
Dear Freya,
I know I’ve let you down, but I need you to know…….
