One evening, Marty and I went over to Doc's house. We talked and laughed about all kinds of things. He showed us some more inventions that he had completed or was still tinkering with. When it got close to dinner time we called our parents and told them that we were having dinner with a friend. I'm sure they didn't care. Less food to make that night. Afterwards, we all went to the living room to watch a movie.
It was really fun getting to hang out with Marty like this. He let me lean on his shoulder and even gently rested his arm across my back. I think I might have dozed off during the movie because after a while I don't remember falling asleep. I woke up just in time to see the ending. It ended well. I smiled at that.
The credits began to roll down the black screen in white font. I sit up from my leaning position and look over to see the clock hanging on the wall near me. Holy cow. It's almost 11 o'clock. My parents would kill me if I came in the house that late. I look at Marty saddened. He looks at me smiling then it changes when he sees the look of alarm on my face. "What's wrong?" He asks, seeing the upset expression on my face. I point to the clock. He looks up to where my finger's pointed. "Shit!" Marty swears. "Everything okay Marty?" Doc asks, turning to look at him. "Yeah, yeah Doc. It's just the time." His voice calms a little. "What do you mean the time, what's wrong with it?" Doc looks at him in surprise. "No Doc, it's almost midnight. I've gotta get home before my parents notice." Marty says, rushing to get his jacket on. I start to gather my things as well. "Oh, well it was nice seeing you two. I'm sorry if I kept you too long." "It's not your fault Doc. Just lately I haven't had any concept of time." Marty blushes ever so slightly. Doc smirks and waves us off as Marty rushes the both of us out the door.
"What was that all about Marty?" I ask him curiously. "Nothing. Just an old thing between me and Doc." He answers. I leave it at that as I climbed into the truck. I have a feeling that he might have been talking about me since we haven't exactly been paying attention to the time lately, but still. He'll tell me if he wants to someday.
Marty starts up the truck and backs out of Doc's driveway then we're off. We sit there in silence for a while before I decided to say something. "So, what are we going to do about me?" I question. He glances at me quickly before putting his eyes back on the road. "Uh, not sure. But you can stay with me. If you don't mind of course." I blush a little. "No, I don't mind." I catch him smiling. Seeing that makes me smile. After a little more stretch of road, we made it back to Marty's house. It was dark and the crickets were chirping softly in the night summery air.
Marty pulls out his house key and ever so quietly turns the lock. Marty tiptoes in first. He whispers for me to follow him. We sneak past his parents room and into Marty's. I felt so, so weird being in his house at this time of night. I felt as if I was almost intruding. Maybe I shouldn't be here. My heart starts beating a little faster. What am I so worried about? Marty's here with me so I should be fine. Shouldn't I? Oh, I don't know.
I plop down on his bed and stare at the ceiling. I feel something land on my chest moments later. What's this? I pick it up to take a closer look. A red tshirt and and a pair of black and red checkered pajama pants. "You can sleep in that if you want." I hear Marty lowly say from the other end of the room. He must be in the closet changing. Before he can come back, I hurry up and change myself. I toss my clothes that I was wearing previously onto the desk chair. I crawl into bed and go sprawled eagle. It actually doesn't feel weird wearing Marty's clothes.
I patiently waited for him to come back into the room. I close my eyes and took a small breath. I keep my eyes closed, feeling tranquil. A few short moments later that changed. When I crack my eyes open, Marty sat beside me staring at me with a small smile. I shake my head and bring my arms inwards to my body. He starts to look at me lovingly. I wonder what's on his mind. What he's been thinking about lately.
