"Mrs. Taylor?"
I hardly hear the voice calling my name as I scan the page, reading every word of Jane Austen's work, Pride and Prejudice. The words soon to follow are sure to be the most intriguing. I know, even though I've read the book hundreds of times, Darcy is about to propose to Elizabeth. His pain and struggling is so evident, the way Jane Austen wrote each line keeps me glued to the pages.
"Mrs.Taylor!" I hear the muffled voice call out my name again and I tear my eyes from the words, falling rapidly back into reality.
I stare up from the book, shaken from my fantasy to be met with the dark brown eyes of my personal maid. She's the one that's helps me with what I need while the others help with cleaning or whatever else Theo demands them to do. I take a deep breath and sigh, "I'm sorry Sofia I didn't hear you come in." I apologise as I sit up on the bed and place my copy of the book on the nightstand; wanting to get back to reading as soon as possible.
"It's fine Mrs.Taylor no need to apologise, I know how much you get into those books of yours." she says with a kind smile and a slight Latino accent.
I nod and stand from the cream silk sheets, I slide on a pair of shoes and walk towards her "Is there something you need?" I ask repositioning the inelegant pony tail on my head.
She sighs looking away, she brushes off her white apron that lays wrapped around her waist over her light blue uniform dress "Mr.Taylor needs you." she says and I inwardly roll my eyes.
"Of course he does." I groan quietly "Thank you Sofia." I nod and look back at the guest room way to nice to be used only when I sleep or read in here.
I walk over to the bed and pull up the duvet, "Mrs.Taylor it's fine I can do that" she says, I shake my head mentally telling her I am more than capable.
I walk over to the nine foot window and grab the heavy dark curtains, I stare out over the garden, full of flowers and gardeners working their hardest to keep the sculpted ferns to perfection and each weed plucked and kept under control. I pull the curtains closed allowing darkness to inch into every corner of the room, the only light source being the lamp next to the bed.
I grab my book and pull open a drawer of the dark oak nightstand keeping it safe. I turn back to Sofia, her bun is pulled too tight on her head, pulling back every black and greying strand of her silk hair. I smile warmly at her trying to collect myself as much as possible before going to see my...husband, if I could even call him that.
Sofia holds open the door for me and I walk out into the great hall of the mansion that I might as well call a castle. The red embroidered carpet laid over the cold white marble floor creates a pathway to each room in the huge house.
I remember the first time I came here, I laugh quietly at the memory. I was 17, not even done with high school and already married. I remember the way Theo looked at me in the beginning, it was kind, even if it was all an arranged marriage set up by my Father and him. The deal was I married Theo so that Theo would help my fathers company survive. I was used to this way of life, the fancy dresses, the proper way to eat, sit and talk. I was used to the servants, maids, cooks, along with other people at your leisure but here it was exciting and new. This mansion being so much larger than my fathers.
I remember asking my Father if I could finish high school and go to college before I married Theo but my Father laughed in my face and told me I would be too busy with my Husband to think about school or anything else. I'm assuming he and my Mother still feel that way, seeing as they contact me once every three months since the five years of this dreadful marriage started, making me twenty two and Theo twenty seven, he was already a millionaire by the age of twenty, his Father split the million dollar company between Theo and his brother and together they made it into a billion dollar company. Theo does most of the heavy lifting, his brother is newly married with a daughter and not one for the crazy business life.
