I stare across the table at my mother, she sips her coffee her pale skin glows under the lights and faint wrinkles outline her eyes and thin pink lips. Her lipstick leaves a print on the white porcine mug. I look around the fancy cafe and at the beautiful elegant people in it, sometimes I like to look at people and try to figure out there story, like maybe the sad looking girl in the corner just got told her lover doesn't love her anymore or maybe the guy in the booth, smiling wide, was just informed that he got a huge promotion.
This morning before I left Theo wasn't in a good mood, but when is he ever. He had been on the phone all morning and didn't sound happy with whomever he was talking to. So I avoided him all morning until I left.
"So any plans for this week?" I ask
She looks over at me "no, I don't think so, I might get some tea with some of my friends" she says and by friends she mean gossip buddies
"That's nice" I say sipping the soup from my spoon and taking a bite of the bread
"What about you?" She asks
"Nothing really, I might call Cara and do something with her" I tell her even though I haven't made any plans, I said that because if I didn't my mom would say I need to get out more
"Cara...?" My Mother asks
"Cara Johnson, she's the Wife of one of Theo's partners or investors...I'm not really sure" I tell her
She nods and takes another sip, she already finished her lunch and is on her second cup of coffee. She looks down at my folded hands on the table and tilts her head "why aren't you wearing your wedding ring?" She asks looking directly at my ring finger
"Oh I...um" I stare down at my finger, I only really wear it when I'm out with Theo or at an event with him "I must have forgotten to put it back on after my shower this morning" I tell her, she looks suspicious but nods anyways
I feel my pocket vibrate and quickly pull my phone out under the table.
'Where did you and your Mother decide to go?'
It's again from Vincent, he's texted me multiple times today, I already told him I didn't want to talk. I told him I would be out with my Mother and too busy to text. Plus I was still a little angry about what he said last night, but of course he doesn't listen. I role my eyes and set it on my leg refocusing back on my mother who happens to be too focus on her phone. I feel it vibrate again and look down
'Come on Adeline don't be a brat' it reads and I gasp, my mouth falling to the ground and my fingers typing lightning speed across the screen
'I'm not being a brat!' I text back
'I know I just wanted you to text me' he says after a minute and I can just imagine his stupid...adorable no! Just stupid smirk
I can't help the small smile that makes its way on my face and I shake my head 'you're annoying' I send back
'I know, now where are you?' He asks and I scoff
'If you must know a café' I tell him
'Which café?' He responds
I chuckle 'wouldn't you like to know' I laugh and look back up at my mom who's staring at me
"Who's that you're talking to?" She asks glancing down at my phone and leaning towards me with a raised eyebrow
"Oh um...Theo" I say in a rush putting my phone away
"Really?" My mother smiles a pleasing smile, obviously proud
"Yeah...I'm really trying to get along with him" I tell her, hating the lies that are coming out of my mouth
