Chapter twenty

My brother starts the grill, and Nikki hooks up her phone to the aux cord. My phone rings as soon as I take a seat next to Michael, and I groan. It better not be Angie. Even if I haven't heard of her much, I don't want to talk to her right now. I know if I answer all the talking is going to be about business. Should I let it go to voice? What if something important popped up?

"Hello?"

"Bella, you need to come back to Maine." she sounds worried.

"Why?"

"It's Chris." her voice is starting to worry me.

"What happened to him?" I quickly get up off my seat.

"He's been in a car accident." oh no.

"Is he ok? How did it happen?" I begin to walk back to the house. I need to head back to Maine.

"No he's in critical condition. And we don't know. No one knows." fuck.

"Get the jet out here." I order, and hang up.

"Why do you need the jet?" Michael's voice comes from behind me.

"Chris got into a car accident."

"Ok, but why do you need the jet?" he asks again.

"I need to fly out to see him."

"No you don't." he says annoyance clear in his voice.

"What do you mean, no I don't?" how dare he tell me that I don't have to go see him?

"You don't. We're out here cause you organized all this." he motions around. "Why are you leaving when all this is because of you?"

"And does it look like everyone is having a good time? No. My parents left without saying a word, Nathan is being an ass, Nikki well I like her. My brother hasn't even said whether this girl is his girlfriend." I point to her, she blushes and looks at Kevin. He then looks at me, his face turns bright red. "I need to leave. Now." I wave towards my brother and his friend, and make my way to the house.

The jet lands, and as soon as I'm giving the clear I jump out of my seat. These past couple of hours have been hell. I don't know what I'll see when I get to the hospital. But I'm already bracing myself for the worst. For all I know I can see him with a breathing tube down his throat, or all beaten and bruised. But if those two are my only hope I'll go with the latter.

As my car pulls up at the hospital, and paps are outside. Why must they always be around? At times like these is where they should draw the line. But no, they rather invade that small amount of privacy and get a good story. I tell the driver to head to the back of the hospital, there is no way I'm going to walk through the paps right now.

The hospital is cold, and smells of disinfectant. The smell just takes me back to my childhood, and how I was always in and out of hospitals. Nurses pass by me, and murmur to each other. If I was here under other circumstances, I would've said something, but for now I just roll my eyes at them and walk into the ICU.

"We're losing him." a nurse shouts. Next thing I know a small group of doctors rush by me, pushing me out of the way. I walk straight to the nurses stations, and it's empty. This is just what I needed. I'm over here freaking out over Chris, and no damn nurse is around.

"Hi, may I help you?" Someone speaks from behind me.

"Yes, I need to know where Chris Evans is." My voice comes out way more panicked then what I wanted it to come out.

"Are you next of kin?"

"Yes." I lie.

"Ok come with me." she begins to walk out of the ICU and into a more intimidating section of the hospital.

"Is he ok?"

"He's hanging in there."

"Hanging in there?" I repeat her words. How can I nurse just say that?

"Yes, he's not getting any better." she come to a halt and points to the door in front of us. "He's in there, and you'll also be needing this to get into this part of the hospital." she hands me a badge.

"Thank you." I step in the room, and all my hopes vanish.

He's connected to multiple machines, that I can't even count. Is he in a coma? I can see a ventilator, meaning he's unable to breathe on his own. This is worse than I thought.

"Come on Chris. Please wake up." I say as I take a hold of his hand, and take a seat. My eyes begin to water, and I don't know why, but I feel the sudden urge to cry.

I see this man as a brother, and if I were to lose him I'd probably die with him. Since I started acting, he's been my co-star. I don't remember a time where I did a movie and he wasn't part of the cast. He's been here for me since I began in this industry.

The door is pushed opened, and a couple of doctors come in. They look at me, and frown. What did I do?

"Are you related to Christopher?" One doctor asks. Shit. They're going to kick me out if I say no.

"Yes, I'm his girlfriend." I would be if I hadn't brotherzoned him. "How's he doing?" I ask when I see them begin to examine him.

"He's not getting worse, which is good, but he's not getting any better." I frown at their words. Fuck. This is not what I wanted to hear.

"What exactly happened to him?" My voice wavers.

"He was hit by a drunk driver, he suffered major trauma to the brain, we got the swelling down, but he also has two broken ribs. He was put into a medically induced coma, because of the swelling." I nod. If he was put in the coma why can't they take him out of it?

"Why hasn't he woken up then? You said the swelling has gone down?"

"That's still unknown to us. He'll wake up when he's ready to wake up. We can't rush these things. He may be out for a couple of days, weeks, or months." I blink back the tears as I hear the last words. Days, weeks or months. Does that mean he won't wake up ever? The doctors finish examining him, and they leave the room quietly. Once again the door opens, and this time it's Angie. I rush to hug her. She wraps her arms around me, and hold me tight.

"It's ok Bella he's going to wake up soon you'll see." she steps back, and looks at me.

"No, no it's not, look at him." my voice raises. "He's not going to wake up!" I yell at her.

"Isabella calm down. It's going to be ok. How about you go to the hotel and get some rest?" she grabs my hand.

"I don't need rest. I need to be here. When he wakes up, I have to be here for him." I take a seat next to him, and rest my forehead on his arm.

"Where's Michael? I didn't see him out in the waiting room." she takes a seat on the other side of Chris.

"He got mad that I came back. So I left him in Mexico." I shrug.

"You just left him? Like that?"

"Yes, I need to be with Chris." I smile looking over at him.

"Well that ended sooner than I thought." Angie's tone is ironic. I roll my eyes at her, and look away. I don't need nor want her damn attitude right now.

"Have you called Miles? Or should I do it?" It would be good to have Miles here with me, not because I need the company, but because I know the paps are going to be everywhere. And since he is my bodyguard he can help with all that.

My phone vibrates, and I don't have to even look at it to know who it is.
