My carriage had slipped on the slick road, wet because of the rain, and fell off of the cliff, smashing to bits on the jagged rocks below. I barely survived. My things weren't so lucky. "This is no way to treat a princess! I'll have my daddy raise your taxes!" I screamed at the sky. the rain seemed to lessen. Just a little bit.
If I stayed out here much longer, I'd catch hypothermia. Or frostbite. I saw some lights. Hopefully they weren't stupid, misleading willow, the wisps, trying to bring me to my death. I walked in the direction of the beautiful lights.
I walked for about a mile, before finding the source of the lights. it was the very castle I had been traveling to. I was a mess, but I knocked anyway. The door was opened immediately. "What are you doing here, peasant?" The queen asked.
"I'm a princess." I said, noticing the prince staring at me. I was used to that. Apperantly I was beautiful, even drenched and covered in mud. I had red curls, and heart shaped pink lips. Perfect figure, perfect everything. The others didn't have a chance. The queen glared, as the king handed me the sign in sheet. I signed next to my name, Cassandra.
Looked like I was the last one here. I went into the room with the other princesses, who also happened to be staring at me. Not the same way as the prince though. In a, why are you covered in mud? way.
The prince entered the room with a blanket, and a new dress. It was not good enough for me, but I wouldn't say that out loud. Not yet. I was playing with this one. "Get changed, before you make a mess." He said, handing them to me. Then he left. I went to the chamberpot, and changed, quite annoyed by his rude manner. I knew he was just trying not to show favoritism, but he should have been showing favoritism towards me!
The first test was dancing. Wonderful. I could easily win that with my kingdom's beautiful and unique dancing style. I whirled gracefully, twisting, leaping, kicking, and bending. Then we walked, talked and sang, in that order. I was sure that I had won all of that too. I walked gracefully, never wobbling, across the beam, never forgetting to walk heel toe heel toe. I was gracious in my talking, with perfect manners, my accent perfecting my false words. And my singing. My singing had been a gift from a fairy on my christening. It was beyond description. And as the final test approached, I was sure I was going to win. "The next test will be... Sleeping?" The king announced uncertainly. I ️frowned, and squeaked, "Sleeping?" before I could stop it coming out. I was no longer on a roll. "James will escort you to your rooms, and we will tell you of the winner tomorrow." The queen said, taking over. James escorted me to my room first. I had him wrapped around my little finger.
I laid down on the twenty mattresses, I guessed were put there for softness. "Oww!" I cried. there was something extremely uncomfortable in my bed.
I searched my mattress, but there was nothing on top of it. I got out of the bed to ask for a different mattress, only to find the door locked. I screamed until my voice gave out, then tried to go to sleep on the horrible bed.
I tossed and turned, sure that whatever it was was giving me bruises. Eventually, I curled up on the rug on the floor and fell asleep. I wasn't going to win that one.
That morning I awoke to the sound of the butler opening the door. he looked at me questioningly, even daring to raise an eyebrow, at the sight of me on the floor, but I ignored him. I did not talk to servants. I changed and let him lead me to breakfast.
As we ate the queen asked, "How did you sleep?" "Horribly." I replied before anyone else could. The other princesses looked shocked. "But the mattresses were so soft!" They cried.
I said, "Mine had some kind of lump. I'm sure it bruised me, and it kept me up. I tried to go out and ask for another one but the door was locked. Eventually I just slept on the floor.
The king said, "Back to the subject of the winner," seeming a bit annoyed by my rudeness. But I was annoyed by their terrible hospitality, so that's what he got. The other princesses stared at me. "The winner of the contest is Cassandra." I smiled as winningly as I could at James. Which was very winningly indeed.
The queen said, "I need to talk to you about your duties as queen." I knew a hastily made, sloppy lie when I heard one, from experience. I wondered what that nasty piece of work was up to. She took me into the room I slept in. She pulled a pea out from under the bottom mattress. "How is that not smashed?" I asked incredulously.
The queen glared at me. "You won because of this test. only a true process would feel the pea. Unfortunately I don't approve of you marrying my son." She held a beautiful mirror up to me and I reached out to touch it, wanting it for my own.
"No!" James cried. He dove for me, wanting to save his future bride, but he was too late. Grabbing at my ankles he tumbled headfirst into the mirror. The world was spinning, and when it stopped, we were in a different land. Where were we? Some kind of mirror realm? I looked down annoyed at the sound of James's groaning. He'd fallen headfirst onto the floor of the mirror cave, and was swiftly going unconscious. "Shut up, will you?" I said kicking him in the side.
