I made my way through the market, searching for the new potion ingredient stall, my friend, Hagatha, told me about. I had black wavy hair, and pretty grey eyes. I noticed that people would often stop and look into my eyes. Odd. Perhaps it was the magic held within. I would have to get that checked.
People wandered to and fro, unaware of the witch in their midst. Sometimes I loved how ignorant humans could be.
I heard a distant crying. I was very good with children, so perhaps I could help the parents. I walked over to the stall, that the sound was coming from, which happened to be right next to the potion ingredient stall.
I saw a squealing baby, not being cared for at all. Who could do such a thing to such a precious little baby girl! I rushed over to the empty stall, and picked up the little girl.
She immediately stopped crying, sensing the magic surrounding her. Baby's and animals are much much better at this than adults.
She had long, tangled, blonde hair, big green eyes and wonderful rosy cheeks. If no one was going to take care of her I would have to. I had always wanted a child.
I rushed out of the market, forgetting the items I needed from the new stall.
My new child would need a place to stay, and the potions shop I lived above was not appropriate. Neither was the apartment.
I carried the her to the doorless tower I grew up in. Witches like to keep their children safe from the world, and their ridiculous witch hunts. and I intended to teach her the arts.
I decided to name her Rupunzel, after rampion, or rupunzel, the rarest potion plant.
Over the years I watched Rupunzel grow into a beautiful young lady. At the age of sixteen, she started to ask about leaving the tower.
"Mother, I want to explore the outside❗️ Just for a few minuets❓" Against my better judgement, I let her out, and was by her side the entire time.
The second we hit the woods surrounding the tower, Rupunzel tripped over a root and disturbed a nest of yellow jackets. She zapped the enemy to dust, not a second too soon, or they would have damaged her sensitive, and pale skin.
I snatched her hand and dragged her out of the woods, back to the tower. I flew her to the window and pushed her in.
"Never again! Not until you're twenty and married to a strong man who can protect you from harm in my place." I had said not quite angrily. Soon I left the tower to go work at the potion shop. "Be back later!"
When I returned to the tower Rupunzel was singing, as usual. What a lovely sound it was. "Rupunzel!" No reply. "Rupunzel, let down your hair!"
"Coming, Mother Gothel❗️" She quickly unbraided her long locks of blonde hair, and tossed the full forty feet of it out the window. I dived out of the way to avoid getting tangled in it."
I tied her hair around my waist, and said, "Rupunzel!" She pulled me up.
"Darling, are you sure that doesn't hurt?" I asked, worriedly when I got to the top. "Nope❗️ Not at all❗️ It must be the potion you put in my shampoo, that makes it way easier to wash all my hair😋"
I nodded and cooked dinner. As we ate Rupunzel said, "Mother Gothel, I have a surprise for you❗️" "Oh, really?" "Yes, and it's really great❗️" She replied excitedly.
After dinner, Rupunzel rushed up to her room, and grabbed the surprise. "Oh my!" It was my old cauldron, spruced up to look like the newest model, the one I couldn't afford. "And that's not all❗️" Rupunzel grinned, flashing her pearly white teeth.
I looked into the cauldron, and gasped. Rupunzel had found one of my old gowns, from when I used to attend the yearly, magykals only, enchanted ball. She turned it into a beautiful dress, yet simple enough to wear to work. That girl had talent for sewing spells!
"Happy birthday❗️" "You remembered!" Sometimes, even I forgot my birthday. That happens when your a witch and live for hundreds of years.
"Good night, my darling." I went downstairs to my room. In the morning I went off to work. I was determined to make enough money to BUY her present this year. I didn't know her real birthday, so I made it February 14, Valentines day. "I will be back at the usual time!"
When I returned, I could see the youngest prince climbing out the window. "What are you doing here?"
"I heard your daughter?'s lovely singing, and came to see what maiden could be living here. "Are you leaving so that you can bring your men and kill us?" I asked angrily. "Wha-" he tried to ask, but I wasn't done."I know how humans are! You kill off witches because you don't understand them. Sure some of us are bad, but not all of us! If that qualifies as a death sentence, then humans should be killed off too! You're not a perfect race either!"
The prince realized who we were and started to back away. "I didn't realize someone so beautiful could be such a monster." He hopped onto his horse and rode away.
I climbed into the tower, and tried to comfort Rapunzel. "I'm sorry he doesn't love you for who you are, but I will always love you." "What if no man ever loves me mother Gothel❓ What if I die alone❓"
"I know of a place, where only the bravest, most caring men, and the kindest, most beautiful girls may enter, with one companion. If we go there, you are sure to find love." "Oh, yes❗️ Please can we go there Mother Gothel❓"
"Of course dear!" I pulled out the artifact. Rapunzel, immediately entranced, touched the surface, and was sucked in. I touched it too. We wouldn't see the outside again in a long time. If ever. For we were in the cursed mirror of the evil queen.
