Chapter 12: Mike

"So, you don't like chocolate?" Mike asked with a shocked expression.

"I like vanilla better." I told him. I showed him around quite a bit and got to know him a little more. He seems nice and generous. We were walking store by store and talking about random things.

"You know your the first person who has ever told me that." He said with a smile.

"Well, consider yourself lucky."

He chuckled. "So do you go to school?"

"No. I already graduated and college doesn't really interest me."

"Why is that?"

I shrugged."I think having a diploma is good enough."

He nodded.

"What about you?" I asked.

"I dropped out."

"Why?"

"Too much work." He joked.

I rolled my eyes. "Ah, so your lazy."

"Hey, I'm not lazy...well when it comes to school I am."

I laughed and asked,"Where are you from?"

"Los Angeles."

"Why'd you move to here?"

He shrugged. "My dad didn't like it and we have family here."

I looked to my right then stopped. It was a store that had game machines, dance games, and arcade game. I stared at the people playing. There were couples, family, teenagers, and children. I looked around and spotted a dad and his daughter. The dad was carrying his daughter on his shoulders. Then it brought me to a flashback.

I was walking keeping my head up and holding onto Daddy's hand. I saw a big store with lots of games and asked Daddy,"Daddy, what's that?" 

"That's an arcade. Want to go check it out?"

"Yeah!" I jumped with excitement and held out my hands."Can you carry me?"

Daddy smiled."Sure sweetie." He grabbed me under my arms and swung me on his shoulders. I giggled. "Are you ready to play games?"

"Yeah!" I said. 

I was wearing a smile and noticed a hand waving in front of my face. "Katherine? Are you okay?"

I blinked and saw Mike standing there. I nodded. "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine."

Mike stood there with a confused look. I just turned around and started walking again like nothing happened. Mike still looked confused but went by my side. "What was that all about?"

"It was nothing."

"It looked like something." He mumbled.

"It seriously was nothing! I just never saw that arcade before." I lied.

He looked at me with those eyes of his and I kept looking forward. 

"Is there anything else you want me to show you?"

He shook his head. "No. I think I got it now."

"Okay." I got out my keys and started walking towards my car with Mike by my side.

I got in the driver's side while Mike got in the passenger side and drove.

"Well thanks for showing me around." Mike said smiling.

I smiled back. "No problem. I guess I'll see you around." I said walking towards my house.

"Yeah. I'll see ya later." He smiled and went inside his house.

I closed my front door and got an apple from the fruit bowl in the kitchen. I looked around and didn't see my mother downstairs. I headed upstairs and went to see if she was up now. Just as I made it upstairs, I saw her step out of her room and my apple fell from my mouth as I gasped. She looked awful. Her hair wasn't brushed and she was wearing no makeup. She was still in her pajamas and her face was pale. She stared at me with puffy eyes and gave me a smile. Wait, what? She didn't even eye me or squinted or didn't show me a disgusted look. She smiled at me. I just stood there confused as ever. Something wasn't right.

"Where did you go?" She asked.

"Out with a friend." I said slowly. 

"Oh okay. I was just wo-" She stopped and held her stomach quickly running past me to the bathroom. 

"Mother?" I followed her to the bathroom to find her kneeling with the toilet lid open and she was puking. I looked away and held a disgusting look. So, that's why she was all pale. I sighed in relief that it probably is just the flu. I went towards my room and layed restlessly on my comfortable bed. I looked over at my clock. 5:37 I groaned. It was still early. I decided to take a nap considering I needed one after being out n about all day.
