Chapter 15: Casey's Back

"Hello, I would like to apply for a job. Are you hiring?" I asked the girl at the cash register of Taco Bell.

She smiled at me. "Yes, we are. Hold on. I'll be right back." She went to the back and came back a minute later and handed me a sheet of paper. "Fill this out and come back Monday at noon for an interview."

"Okay, thank you." I smiled and went towards the exit door.

Monday

12:00 pm

I went inside and up to the cash register. It was the same girl as last time. She recognised me and smiled. "You're back. Did you fill out the application?"

"Yes." I replied and handed her the sheet of paper.

"Okay. I'll show this to my manager and see if he's ready for the interview now. Take a seat if you want."

"Okay." I sat down and waited.

The girl came back and had a chubby, black bearded guy with her. I stood up to the desk and shook the guy's hand. "Hi, you must be the manager."

"Yes, I am." he said with a deep voice. "I read your application also. I think we should take this in my office."

"Okay." I followed after him and waved to the cashier girl.

"Good luck." She whispered.

"Thanks." 

We went into his office and sat down. Let's see how this goes..

Wednesday

11:54 am

I had my phone up to my ear waiting for Justin to pick up. I heard the ring stop and his familiar voice.

"Hey." He said happily.

"Hi."

"What's up?"

"I have good news."

"What is it?"

"You know how I applied for Taco Bell?" I asked.

"Yeah?"

"I got the job!"

"Really?"

"Yep."

"That's great Kath!"

"I know. My first job."

"I'm happy for you." I heard another voice on the line.

"Who's that?"

"That's Scooter. I have to go. I'll call you later, ok?"

"Okay."

"Love you."

"Love you too." I hung up and left my phone on my bed to go downstairs.

'Ding Dong'

I went to the door and opened it. It was Casey.

"Hey." she said.

"Hi. Didn't expect to see you."

"I know. It's been a while."

"I know..." It was silent for a moment. "Did you want to come in?"

"Sure." I closed the door behind her and turned around to face her.

"I saw you on the news a couple weeks ago. I just wanted to see if you were okay."

"Oh. I'm okay."

"And I wanted to apologize.."

"Really?"

"Yeah. I mean I know why you didn't tell me. I would've done the same thing if I was in your position."

"Oh, well good."

"So are we BFFs again?" she asked hopeful.

"Sure." I laughed and hugged her.

"Great!" We pulled apart and sat down on the living room couch. "So you and Justin, huh?"

"Yeah..we actually are going out now.."

"What!? When did this happen?"

"Like a week ago."

"You know you're like the luckiest girl on Earth right now?"

I laughed. "Maybe.."

She looked out the window and cocked her head to the side. "When did you get new neighbors?"

"Like a couple weeks ago."

"Geesh Kath. Is there anything else new?"

"Well.."

She looked at me. "What?"

I sighed. "My mom passed away."

Her mouth dropped and she covered it with her hands. "Oh my gosh, Kath I'm so sorry."

"It's okay. It was her time I guess."

"How?"

"She had cancer."

"Oh my gosh. Kath, I don't even know what to say. I'm sorry." She gave  me a hug.

I smiled. "It's okay."

'Ding Dong'

"I'll get it." I said as I got up from the couch and opened the front door. It was Mike.

"Hi."

"Oh, hi."

"I just wanted to talk to you."

"About what?" 

Just then, Casey came from the living room and went by my side. "Hey who's at the-" she started to say but stopped once she looked up.

"Casey?" Mike exclaimed then scowled.

"Michael?" Casey said, a surprised look on her face.

"Woah, you guys know each other?" I asked, looking back and forth at them.

"Uh huh..." Casey answered.

"How?" I asked.

She told me and I gasped.
