Chapter 13
*Ryden's POV*
“Tara, wait up” I yelled as frosty plumes blew out in front of my face.
She didn't even turn around. We've been walking since early morning and haven't seen any of the other tributes. It seemed almost a little to much peaceful. We haven't heard a cannon fire all night, which made me wonder what the Careers are up too. Right on cue I hear an explosion from far away. Tara and me both turn around to look at the now cloud of fume in the air. I turn back around and look at Tara.
“What do you think that was” Tara asked.
“I don't know, but we should stay away from that area” I say
All of a sudden the scent of pine got stronger, and the leaves that weren't covered in snow turned a dappled shade of emerald. I stared intensely at the leaves until I was surprised when I saw movement. I motioned for Tara to move back. She moved back while loaded her bow and putting it at ready, I grabbed two daggers one in each hand. Then there was a load movement of air we looked up, and something black was falling from the sky very close to us. As it got closer I saw bits and pieces of connected wires. Bomb. It landed right at the spot of the moving leaves and explodes. The air from the explosion sends Tara and me flying back and hitting trees.
I use my arms to try and cover the snow, leaves, and rocks that scrap my face. A cannon goes off, and I instantly look over to Tara. She's looking right back at me, and the wind stops as we both get up. My eyes widen at whats in front of us. A bloody arm without a body, and a knife in the palm of its hands.
“Run” I say as I grab Tara's wrist.
We could hear the falling of the bombs as they landed behind us. They landed everywhere as we head closer to the frozen solid river we saw. I slipped on the snow and fell taking Tara down with me. I looked back up the sky for any bombs coming our way, but it looks like they've stopped. I stand up slowly to get a better look at the sky. It seems normal except for the smoke everywhere. Tara climbs a tree to get a better look.
“Wait, whats that” She said pointing to our right.
I move over a little to get a better look. A huge bomb with thick red wires was falling from the sky at high speed next to the mountains. I backed up as it landed. The force was so high the ground shook and air came rushing by. I looked back up into the sky where the explosion was clearly seen in the sky with smoke everywhere. Then a canon went off followed by another. Two tributes killed in the same explosion.
I swallowed “I think its over”
“There’s so much smoke in the air” says Tara
“I know, I'm going to get a higher look I'll be right back”
I climbed a close tree to its highest branch. The gray smoke seemed to be spreading all around the sky covering the whole arena. Everything gets darker and the freezing cold wind blows harder. I hear thunder in the distance. I stand up on the branch making sure to balance myself as Lightning strikes one of the trees making it fall.
“I think its going to rain” Tara whispers up to me.
The rain starts from where the ledge and river where at. Somethings different about this rain I notice its not the normal color of rain drops. “Ahh” The green rain drop fell in my eye and was burning now. I lost my balance, and fell down to the ground still covering my eye.
Tara shrieked “Are you okay” she said at my side.
“The rain it burns!”
“Acid Rain”
Tara pulled me to my feet and we started running. I kept tripping over the large roots of the trees and the snow. I still couldn't see normally out of my right eye. The rain was spreading faster and was catching up to us. Trees were being knocked down everywhere by the lightning. I was gasping for breath from trying to run so fast but it was no use the rain was already falling all around use burning our skin to a blood red.
“Over here” I said to Tara a little to loud.
We ran through some large dark bushes that seemed to be covering something. The branches of the bushes concealed us a little from the rain, but didn't help because the rain drops that did hit us burned like fire. I took one more step to get out of the bushes, but ended up falling down a hill. I spin and turn until I hit something at the bottom. I sat up and rubbed my eye and saw Lidia doing the same thing.
“Lidia, its you!”
“Ryden, I don't think this is a time for greetings”
In the next second there was a sword pointed at my head from the District three boy. His sister was just standing behind him clearly it could be seen that she had been hit by the ran worse than anyone. There was a crunch of leaves and then Tara was there holding her bow at the District three boy. The rain was still pouring.
“This is no time for arguing” Lidia yelled at us.
She got on her feet and grabbed my wrist and ran. Everyone else was following close behind. The burning from the rain continued and trees started falling in front of us. We could see the Cornucopia in the distance. Then a tree falls inches away from our feet and we stop dead in our tracks. Lidia grips my wrist as we look in the direction of where the tree had been. There was the Careers. The District one boy, Shine had a dangerous gleam in his eyes.
“Get them!” Shine yelled at the rest of the Careers.
Lidia yanked on my wrist as I grabbed Tara's. We jumped over the tree trunk and headed for the Cornucopia with the acid burning our skin. The District three kids followed, but the careers were right behind us. I turned around to see that they were just as red as we are from all the ran. Shines face was red either from the burning or from anger.
“Let them go” Shine yelled at them.
But before that one of the Careers shot an arrow, and it hit the little girl from three. She fell to the ground as the careers ran to there cabin to shield themselves from the rain. The girls brother ran back for her. Lidia let go of my wrist and ran back as well I was heading back to, but Tara grabbed me and pushed me into the Cornucopia. The rain no longer hit us, but I was paying attention on the scene going on outside. The District three boy was crouching next to his sister as Lidia stood next to them. It was clear Darling wasn't going to make it she was as red and bloated as a tomato and she had an arrow in her back. The said somethings to her brother and to Lidia and then the canon went off. Darling was dead.
Lidia crumbled to her knees either from the death or the acid rain. I ran from the Cornucopia as Tara called my name I had to go get Lidia. I put her arm around my neck and helped her to her feet then we ran to the Cornucopia as she called Will to come along. I pulled her to in as we looked out to where Will still stayed next to Darlings. After minutes he got up and walked to the Cornucopia. It was like the rain didn't even fays him anymore. He sat down, and there was a dangerous, crazy gleam in his eyes that scared me. Suddenly my eyes felt heavy and I collapsed.
