I. An Exquisitely Tragic Love Affair
(Part 20)
"Ohhh! How lovely to meet you!" Adam's mom gushed to Isabella. "I've heard all about you!" She grabbed Isabella's shoulders and placed a heavy kiss on each of Isabella's cheeks. Isabella's stiff body was obvious to her, but Adam's mom decided it wasn't the place to point it out.
His dad was the complete opposite of his mom. "It's good to see you," he said, almost like they had met before. His eyes were cold and Isabella could tell that his feelings totally contradicted his words. He didn't even extend his hand. Adam's mom cleared her throat to interrupt her husband's rude greeting. "I guess your parents couldn't make it?" she asked. Isabella stared at her blankly, only half comprehending her question. Adam, recognizing the signs, stepped in for her. "Oh. I didn't tell Isabella that her parents were invited," he said. His mother smiled. "Oh they're welcome anytime!" Isabella neither smiled nor frowned, her expression remained blank, but it was gaining that far off look.
Adam pulled her away from his parents. "Isabella," he whispered. She didn't answer, and her eyes remained the same. He put his hand on her soft cheek. His touch brought her back. Adam sighed, "I was losing you for a second." She looked at him. She had been about to have a flashback. Once that started, she had never been able to stop it from happening. No one had ever been able to bring her back. No one but Adam...
"She's not much of a talker is she?" Rick said to his wife. "Adam likes her, so you better not say that to him," Adam's mother replied back to him. "Oh please! She's a charity case to him! He's taking advantage of her! He probably gets her drunk and he seduces her." Rick looked over at his son and the girl. "She's drunk right now, I guarantee. Well, I can tell you one think. Jake would never take advantage of anyone. He especially wouldn't take advantage of some sick girl," he said matter of factly.
Adam's mom was so outraged, she could have screamed. He hadn't seen the way Adam had talked about Isabella, and he didn't know anything about her. "Is that how low you think of your son?!" she whispered harshly as to not explode and cause a scene within this community of elites. "You think he's a player who gets a different girl into bed every other day just because he can?! Just because he's bored..." Rick shrugged his shoulders. "Your words not mine..." His wife took a deep breath. "I am proud of my son. Both of my sons. And neither one is better than the other," she told him with determination.
Isabella smiled up at Adam's twinkling blue eyes. "Thanks for bringing me back," she said shyly. She hugged him for the first time, and the hug was short and delicate. Adam caught himself wondering, 'does she get the same big rush when we go in for a hug and our cheeks brush?'
Rick grunted in disgust. She was actually falling for his fail of a son's act. Jake would never even think of using a girl in that way.
Adam looked around. "Is there a bathroom?" he wondered out loud. A lady standing close by, answered, pointing and saying, "right over there." "Can you hold my phone?" Adam asked Isabella. She nodded her head and took it from his hands. "I'll be right back," he reassured her, and she nodded her head.
A text appeared on the screen, along with a picture message. Isabella couldn't read the whole thing on the screen, and being curious, she opened Adam's message and looked. She felt a little guilty, and later regretted it completely.
The picture Adam had been sent, was that of a naked girl. 'I know you wanna lick this,' she had said. Isabella's heart skipped a disgusted beat. She looked at his other messages from other girls. 'I'm wet for you...' 'If only you were here right now, the things I would do...' There were so many like that. She felt herself freeze up inside and she felt herself grow more uncomfortable and stupid with every second that went by. She placed the phone on a nearby chair, and with as much poise as she could muster, walked herself out of the gala. And in that, she walked herself out of a player's hands.
