II. A Test of True Love

(Part 38)

Isabella lifted herself out of the bed and pulled a bathrobe over her naked body. She smiled when she saw Adam in the bed too, his one hand cradling the blankets to his bare chest. He looked younger when he slept, but that's what people always looked like when they were under the sleeping spell. His breathing was calm and gentle, unlike his labored breathing from the night before.

Isabella sat down at the desk that he kept in his room and pulled out a piece of elegant writing paper. She brought a pen to the paper and wrote the salutation. When she had once written letters, the words had come easily, her hand moving in a fluid motion, but now it stood still. The words she wanted to say were inside her and it was important she get them out, but sometimes words are more easily thought than expressed.

She looked back at Adam. Her savior. Her Achilles heel. One look at him and the armor she had protecting her, fell. She shook her head in bewilderment. How was it that he was the one she opened up to? Him, when so many other people had tried?

She looked back at the paper and came up blank, but there was no way she was abandoning this letter. But somehow her mind wondered. Farther and farther until there was no hope for that letter... At least not now...

Four months ago, it was the same day that Adam had forgiven her. The sun had set, replacing with it, a dark sky decorated with twinkling stars. Adam had come and hugged Isabella from behind and rested his chin on top of her hair. "You know Starr, you're nothing that I've ever wanted..." Isabella had turned around to look at him questioningly. "Yet you're everything that I need," he had finished with a smile. Somehow it had seemed miraculous and unbelievable when he had said that. How could Adam, Navy SEAL Adam, need someone? And her of all people? She was the one who truly needed him. She was the weak one, but when she had looked in his eyes, they were different from that night at the bar. They seemed bright and happy, and Isabella had only realized then that they had been missing something. They were missing her...

Three weeks ago, Adam had bought an apartment. It was small, but it had the essentials; it even went beyond and gifted Adam with an electric fireplace. Adam had flicked the switch and the orange flames shot up. He and Isabella sat in front of it, absorbing the warmth of the man made pleasure. Adam sat with his legs extended in front of him and Isabella lay with her head on his lap. "What do you think this is?" Adam had asked quietly as he ran a hand though Isabella's hair. "What are we? Ya know, like what are we doing here...together?"

"I don't get what you're asking," Isabella had said.

Adam had sighed. "I just mean..." He had paused, trying to collect his thoughts, but whatever way he put it, it sounded too deep. Too 'I love you. Do you love me?' and that's not what he wanted. "I don't even know what I'm saying," he breathed.

Isabella had looked at him and smiled. She picked her head up and tickled Adam's sides. He squirmed away from her, which made her pursue him even more. They laughed loudly and eventually, Adam forced some willpower upon himself to attack Isabella. She laughed until her stomach ached and tears had formed in Adam's eyes. When she stopped, she positioned herself over Adam, locking his arms above his head in a forced surrender. "I do know that nothing could ever replace you," Isabella told him seriously, with a smile. "Nothing could make me feel like you do..."

Just last night, Isabella's heart had been beating a mile a minute, feeling like any second she would explode from it. The beat pressed against her ears and created a steady thud throughout her body. She pulled away from Adam. "Adam, I'm scared..." she whispered to him.
