II. A Test of True Love
(Part 34)
Adam stepped into the busy airport. He got his bags from the conveyor belt and looked around for Isabella and his family. He listened for Isabella's voice, hoping it would call his name like it did every time he came home, but he heard no such voice. He scanned the crowds of people, looking for the people he loved, but he didn't see them. They hadn't come.
When he had been going to the airport, Sergeant Wright had been telling him bits of information about himself. "Alright Adam, you're twenty-five years old. You've served for six years..." He hadn't understood why he was being told all that, but he hadn't questioned the sergeant. No one questioned the sergeant.
Adam called a taxi with the pay phone, since no one seemed to be there for him.
First place he drove to was Isabella's house. He couldn't wait to see her. He had dreamed about her, envisioned their reunion, and thought about her all the time. When the driver pulled up to the house, an instant smile formed on his lips. He had missed that house. Memories of the two of them in that house was enough to make Adam explode from happiness. It looked empty though, so as Adam got out, he told the driver to wait for him. He knocked on the door, but there was no answer. He looked through the windows, and yes there was furniture, but not Isabella's. Isabella didn't live there anymore.
Next he had the taxi take him to his house. Thankfully, they still seemed to live there.
Not wanting to startle his family inside, he knocked lightly on the door. His dad answered and when Adam gave a friendly greeting, his dad stood before him speechless.
"What the hell..." he whispered. He passed a hand over his eyes. "I didn't drink today. Why am I seeing things?" he whispered to himself.
"Dad, I'm right here. You're not seeing things," Adam reassured.
Rick Green's face turned pale. "Jake," he called inside the house loudly. Adam pushed passed his dad with a smile, wanting to see Jake. "Jake!" he yelled excitedly.
Adam's older brother paused at the sound of his voice. "Adam?" he questioned.
"No, it's Will Smith," Adam rebounded jokingly.
Jake broke out into a smile. "Oh my God!" he yelled and embraced Adam tightly. "Mom! Mom! Adam's home!"
Adam's mom walked into the foyer where the reunion was taking place. At the sight of Adam, she too passed a hand over her face. She stared at Adam like he was a ghost. She, and everyone else in her house, had believed Adam was dead. She held onto the wall for support. "Mom," Adam breathed out with a smile. Mrs. Green ran over and wrapped her arms around her son. Tears of relief flooded her eyes.
Finally, Adam's dad did come over and the four of them stood in the entrance of the house, celebrating Adam's return after four dead years of silence...
After dinner, Adam told his family how Isabella no longer lived in her old house. He asked the three of them if they knew where she lived now, but no one knew. They tried everything they could think of to contact Isabella, but they didn't succeed. Adam's mom had explained how she had given Isabella the DVD and how they had all presumed he was dead. Adam nodded his head solemnly. He didn't want to think about Isabella moving on, Isabella crying and knowing he had caused that pain.
Adam signed up for a few college classes days later and started a week after his return. His first day was hectic. He walked through the crowed halls, lost. He had a map, but it's wasn't really helping out. The building was huge, and even though he was only taking four classes, they were scattered all over the place. He usually waited until the hallways were empty and the classes had begun, and then he would ask a secretary for help.
