I. An Exquisitely Tragic Love Affair

(Part 32)

Isabella started college the year of Adam's first year of service. She listened to the girls as they rambled on about their boyfriends. She heard them whispering about how good sex was. She wondered how long their boyfriends would last. What would happen if suddenly he wasn't able to perform the way she wanted.... Meanwhile, Isabella herself waited months for a single kiss. A kiss that would make the months apart worth every second. She wore his hoodie because it brought her comfort. She stayed up late at night because she didn't want to miss the chance of talking to Adam. She waited by the phone just in case he called. She prayed every night for his safety even if she wasn't sure praying did anything for their cause... She waited back at home while Adam was off at war.

His letters and phone calls came infrequently, but they still came. They were enough to keep her hope alive because she knew that missing Adam was getting easier to handle every day because even though she was one day further from the last time she saw him, she was one day closer to the next time she would. When they did get the chance to talk on the phone, they talked about life and their dreams. They talked about their fears and their regrets. Deep things. They didn't find the need to say trivial stuff; a conversation with little importance.

But slowly, his phone calls ceased and eventually his letters stopped coming too...

Ten months went by without a letter or phone call............

Fourteen months..........

Isabella kept herself busy with things to do, because every time she paused, she thought of Adam....

Why hadn't he contacted her in fourteen months?

Twenty months.........

Isabella was falling asleep with Adam holding her tight. She could feel his soft lips touch her skin, he whispered her name in that voice that was full of sexual tension. She kissed him and whispered his name in response. He held her even tighter, but then she woke up.

It was just a dream.

She turned and laid on her side, whispering "I miss you baby.... Please come home....."

Twenty six months.......

If a tear fell from Isabella's eye every time she wished Adam was there with her, she'd have a puddle of dead wishes lying at her feet.

Thirty one months..........

She always thought of him before she fell asleep. The words Adam had said, the things they had laughed about, the silent moments they had shared...

Thirty seven months.......

Isabella had thought watching Adam leave was hard, but knowing he wasn't coming back was even harder....

Three years and Isabella hadn't heard a word from Adam. He was dead. He had died defending his country. How could he have died?! He wasn't supposed to die!! Yet he was dead...

Isabella let her shoulders heave, and a heavy sob escaped her mouth. "Adam!" she cried out. "A-A-Adam..."

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, she'd walk right up to heaven, or wherever he was, and bring him home again.

But something crossed her mind. When Logan had died, she'd received a call.

Why hadn't she received a phone call about Adam?
