Chapter 10: The epiphany

The car journey was a quiet one. Neither of us wanted to talk because we knew it would only lead to an argument. We didn't last long though. A few towns from Venice we stopped for a while and walked through the local park. I tried to take his hand in mine but he moved his hand away.

"I'm still angry..." He uttered as quietly as he could. I could feel the tension and the anger in his tone.

He ran his fingers through his smooth blonde hair. I could feel the anger building up. He had been keeping this in instead of talking about it. I had never seen Luke this angry not even when we were engaged.

I knew now that he could be capable of a lot of damage and I had to keep us safe and him exposing us would not go well at all.

He looked at me and cursed walking away. I waited a minute before looking around and following him. He left the park and begun walking through one of the cobbled streets.

"Luke please!"

"No. Just... Just leave."

"Not without you!"

"Did you do this on purpose?"

"What how could you say this?"

"I bet you're helping him aren't you? You certainly are very attached to this psycho!" He had stopped now metres away facing me. A few people had stopped to see what was going on.

I walked up to him fast, "Luke. Keep your voice down. Calm down!"

"No! I will not calm down!"

"Well at least keep quiet or you'll get us caught."

His eyes were burning a fiery red and his fists were clenched.

His anger had beat his self control. He walked towards me now and put his hand either side of my head and made me look into his eyes. I tried to push him away.

"This not my fault. I am not working with him. I promise you I'm not."

"How can I be sure though?"

"Do you really think he changed me that much?"

"Yes." I stepped away from him and stood back.

"Really?" I couldn't help it. I cried. He saw the change in me and he tried to step closer realising his mistake. I stepped away. "Don't." I walked past him and away down the street. He followed.

He stayed quiet for a while until I stopped and turned to face him.

"I'm sorry."

"No. Luke. You can't just say sorry."

"What do you want me to say?"

"Noting. I just want us to leave. To go back to the car and move on."

"I can't just do that."

"Why not?"

"I'm too angry. I need to..."

"Don't say it!" I looked around us at all the people watching and Luke was suddenly aware of them too,

"I can't believe it. What did you write in the notebook."

"Just notes on where we'd been. Research on places we went to like a... a diary. I didn't say where we were going I swear!"

"How can I be sure though?"

"Because why would I lie to you?"

"Well it's not like you've never lied before!"

"Wow really? You're bringing that up again?!

"Yes I am! I don't trust you the same anymore."

"Because of one small lie?"

"A lie that changed my life!"

"What?"

"You heard me. It changed my life. I would never have gone out walking and well..." He threw his arms in the air.

"You blame me?"

"Yes. I do. I blame you."

"Brilliant just brilliant. Your true colours are showing now aren't they?"

"Yes. Maybe they are. And once again you lies have got us into trouble!"

"I did not lie about anything!"

"You lied about what was in the notebook!"

"WHAT?" I shouted.

"I saw what you wrote! You know you mentioned our destinations and now you feel guilty but why didn't you just admit it How can I learn to trust you again?"

"Maybe you don't have to!" I walked away again but he grabbed my arm and spun me around.

"Where are you going?"

"I'm leaving. I aren't staying here."

"You have nowhere to go!"

"I don't care."

"No stop. We'll go back to the car and talk about this later. We are both tired."

"You have no idea what I've been through. Yes I'm tired but that's not the issue. You can't just... He changed me yes. But for the better. I'm stronger now. It's you that weakens me!"

"Really?"

"I thought that was obvious."

"Look."

"No you look. It's my turn to get angry. I cannot be blamed for an accident this is the most rebel I've been in my life and I don't know what I'm doing. All I know is we are running and we need each other. We can't just fight like this and send out blame whenever something goes slightly wrong."

"I didn't mean to. I just the pressure is building and I had to see if you were helping them and that just sent of the alarms."

"Well I'm not working with him. I've had no contact with him since he was taken. Come on Luke we need to go."
