The cabin was in a forest with thick and tall tree trunks and a full canopy with barely any light shining through.
I had been here for about a week now and was starting to settle in. I picked out a black shirt from a wardrobe.
I headed out to the porch and sat down on the steps. I could not feel the temperature around me anymore and that felt so odd.
It started raining, the kind that is so fine its almost invisible but soaks through your clothes in seconds. It was calming to me. I watched as some rabbits sprinted across the a meadow in the distance.Michael stood against the door frame watching me.
"Come join me?" I gestured with my hand and patted the step next to me.
He sat slowly and then look to me.
"What are you doing out here?"
"It's calming."
He glanced out into the field and fell silent.
Michael got out a cigarette and lit it offering me one.
"Can vampires even smoke?"
"Well we can't die from it."
I took one and he lit it for me. Part of me always wanted to smoke but I never dared. It felt good. There was something relaxing about it. Seeing the smoke and the sound of the lighter.
"I have to do some work so make yourself at home." I nodded and waited a moment before heading inside. I saw the door click shut behind him and heard the door lock.
My mind went back to escaping. If I ran maybe I could get away. I can live off the animals. But what if I found a human?
I didn't even know where I was and here I had a place to stay and eat.
I sighed, it wasn't like there was much for me back home really. I lived alone in a small flat half a mile from town. I had an office job and no hopes of ever being the photographer I wanted to be after Uni. I'd been jilted by my fiance and so there was no real life for me there but was there even a life for me here?
"What's in that room?" I asked Michael later that day.
"It's my study."
"What work do you do."
"Just some office computer stuff."
"Oh. I used to work in an office. Oh wait. What will people think? I disappeared. Oh god."
"Don't worry about it. People disappear all the time."
I looked at him shocked.
"Did you choose me on purpose because I was so pathetic and alone?"
"I didn't choose you. You chose this."
"I did not. I chose to not die."
"Yes and so now you are undead!"
I couldn't believe my ears. I knew I didn't know him but it never crossed my mind why he made me this way. He could have just ended it right there.
"Why didn't you just kill me?"
"I couldn't."
That night I barely slept. My mind was not at ease and I slept downstairs away from him. I was angry and I'd never felt anger like this before.
The next day I still wanted answers but found my coffin was shut tight. I kicked and kicked but realised something was propped against it.
I pushed the lid open slowly, enough to slide out.
A bookcase had been propped against the coffin and there was books everywhere as well as the distinctive smell of blood.
I ran upstairs and found everything a mess. The study was unlocked and trashed and a trail of blood lead from the cabin.
I ran outside but the trail stopped and there was car tracks.
I sprinted back inside and headed straight for the study. It was a mess. Papers everywhere. Books torn up. The computer was still on. I moved the mouse and saw a sign. It read M.O.V.H.
What could this mean?
There was a section of jars with funny liquids inside and spray bottles. One literally read 'To hide from humans'
I went on the computer which had already been logged in on thankfully. I discovered the page last opened and gasped falling from the chair.
M.O.V.H
Ministry of Vampire Hunters
Michael! What happened to you! What did they do?
I needed to find him.
I searched the cabin and found a suitcase. I packed clothes and some of the odd bottles that I thought were useful.
I found an address for the place and researched all I could.
I found a note on his bed and I braced myself.
It simply said 'Get out of there!
Thanks. Real helpful Michael.
Apparently their base was a good few miles away but not too far. I could walk their to the village and stay in the pub.
Mr. Ackleby. The Minister. I needed to see him.
Sending a carefully composed email I asked for an interview for an article.
Now I had to wait.
