It had been a few days after Rodger's lung surgery when the doctors came into our little room with some news. We could visit him, and he was responsive and awake most of the time! We all jumped in joy, and crammed into Rodger's room. Unfortunately he was still required to stay in the intensive care unit until it was confirmed that he was well enough to function without the help of all the machines pumping air into his lungs, or now just a lung.
It was the first time that I'd ever seen Rodger smile. It was such a big smile, I could almost see all of his teeth. I didn't even think he had the ability to smile up until this point. Erica kissed his head and Emily and Owen tried to climb into his bed to say hello, but the doctors quickly shooed them off fearing that they would intervene with the remaining machines helping him survive. Emma said hello as well, and gave him a big hug. I was happy for Rodger.
But I hung back, afraid to ruin the moment. Obviously he cared far more about his family than me, so I hung back watching everyone rejoice. After a few minuets, Rodger abruptly said,
"Can I speak to Silvia alone?" He asked. The room was silent. I was frozen, what was he going to say?
"Sure." Erica said ushering all her children out of the door. I knew that they didn't leave, because I saw all four of their faces pressed up against the little window on the door.
I took an uneasy step towards Rodger's bed. I sat in the little chair that sat beside it. Then I realized that he was clutching a little piece of paper; the signed football card!
"Silvia, I can't thank you enough for this. I so didn't deserve your kindness." He said looking at the card beaming.
"It was nothing. I knew you would like it." I said feeling every bit of Rodger's joy.
"I'd also like to take you up on that offer. I think you'd make a pretty cool friend." Rodger said happily.
I smiled. It may have taken a football card to melt his icy attitude, but I could rest assured that I had made another friend I planned on keeping.

School was bustling the next day. The student council had announced that they would be holding the first annual Hollow Springs High Winter Formal Dance. Posters hung throughout the halls painted in glitter glue announcing the big event. To be honest, I wasn't too happy about the whole idea. The thought of going to a dance made me feel sick.
Iris felt otherwise.
"Pa-leeze! We can go as a group! Me, Josh, You, and Wes." Iris begged eyeing the ticket sales line.
"Aren't dances more for dates?" I asked sticking my head inside my locker trying to find a spare pencil for French class.
"Sure, but I mean hanging with friends is fun too." Iris said.
"We can do that other places than the dance." I said rolling my eyes.
"Ug. I'll talk you into it, you'll see." She said walking down the hall to her gym class.
I shook my head as I headed off to French. Mr. Ragout was probably one of my least favorite teachers. He only spoke French, so we had to desperately decode his foreign language to pass the class. I dreaded his class with a burning passion. As soon as I walked in, Mr. Ragout was grading our test papers, and the whole class was chatting away. I sat in my assigned seat in the very back of the room. Another reason why I despised Mr. Ragout was because he was one of the only teachers who had assigned seating.
I sat next to Destiny Frank who was probably the biggest blabbermouth in all of the school. She was in a deep debate with Anika who sat to her right about whether or not the ticket sales for the dance were over priced.
Everyone had something to do or talk about, until Matthew Clark came into the room with a tiny box in his hand. Matthew was the biggest jock ever. He was exactly like the dimwitted football captain in all of those teenager movies. But pretty much every girl in the school had a crush on him, and every female being in the room held their breath as they anxiously waited to see what he was here for. He silently walked over to Brittany McCain and got down on his knee.
"Brittany, would you do the honor of accompanying me to the dance?" He asked smiling his perfect array of pearly whites. He opened the box to reveal a bracelet with snowflake charms dangling off of it.
Brittany nearly fell over in shock and sputtered out,
"Y-yes!" and everyone applauded, even Mr. Ragout.
Satisfied, Matthew walked out of the classroom leaving Brittany squealing and waving her hand up and down.
Eventually, Mr. Ragout began the lesson and they day went on from there. I ran back to the hospital to check in with Rodger after the dismissal bell rang, only to find a very unpleasant surprise waiting for me.

A/N: Heyyy! I finally posted another chapter, I hope you like it! :) I had a tough time creating a charcter name for Mr. Ragout because I couldn't think of any French names... (It's pronounced RAG - OOO) I was just randomly practicing the Be our Guest song in my head, (I'm the Beauty and the Beast play) And got to the Beef Ragout line and was all, ok I'll call him that. Sorry for my randomness! LOL.
