My first week at Hollow Springs High went as quick as fall break. I was in all of the gifted classes, but stayed on top of my work most of the time. I even did my homework over at Iris and Wes's house the other day and we had a lot of fun. However, the happiness of the school year didn't last long. Because on Monday I had a "pleasant" surprise waiting for me. Emma walked with me to school like she normally did because her junior high was just a few blocks away from the high school.

"Bye Silvia!" She chimed as she turned to corner to enter the building.

"See you later!" I said and kept walking along.

I got to school and went inside the main building and found my way to my locker. I opened it to find a note written in amazing penmanship.

Silvia,

Don't you dare steal Iris away from me. We've been best friends since the first grade, and I don't want you to rob my friendship... Watch your back.

-Anika.

I snatched the note and crumpled it in my fist. I threw it onto the ground and slammed my locker shut. Who is she kidding? It's a free country, I can be friends with Iris if I want to! Right? I thought as I walked through the halls trying to get to Mr. Redson's class. I then ran into Wes, no literally I walked into him, smacked into his chest, and if he had any papers they would have went flying through the air like in the movies.

"Sorry." I mumbled

"It's fine." Wes smiled and helped me up.

We walked silently to algebra together. We were still pretty early and Anika was sitting in my seat next to Iris, who was not tardy today. I walked up to her them fuming mad at her.

"Oh hi, Silvia. I was just inviting Iris to my party on Saturday." She tittered. I got the hint, I wasn't invited.

"I was totally going to invite you, but I just can't allow a person like you to come to my legendary parties." She smiled and turned back to Iris who's mouth was a wide "O".

"Um, not cool." She said to her.

"Whatever." Anika said and stomped back to her seat.

I took my regular spot and buried myself in my sweater. Iris tapped my shoulder.

"Go away." I moaned.

"I'm sorry about Anika, she doesn't know what your going through." Iris said trying to comfort me.

"Really? I'm pretty sure the whole school knows that I'm an orphan who is lonely and depressed." I said my voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Well, yea I guess there's that. But Anika has always been like that." Iris said almost sounding like she was comforting herself.

"Why are you friends if that's her normal behavior?" I asked stuffing my face further into my sweater burrow.

Iris never answered and I heard Mr. Redson begin the lesson. I kept my head down the entire class. I was surprised that I didn't get scolded or anything. Maybe the teacher knew that I was suffering with the loss of my mother and let it go.

The rest of the school day was rough. Especially lunch. Everyone except Josh and Wes were stone cold. I didn't say a word the entire lunch break. I went back to class with Wes and sat in my seat by the window. We had English with Miss Kathy and she projected a short documentary of William Shakespeare onto our projection screen. I got a tingly feeling in my nose, and my eyes got all blurry, then before I knew it I was bawling, right in front of the class.

Miss Kathy got up from her desk and lead me out of the room as everyone stared at me. We walked into the hall and I tried to explain why I was doing this, acting like a cry baby and all, but Miss Kathy put a finger to her lips and said,

"I know." And handed me a nurse pass. So I took it gratefully and headed down to the nurse's office.

When I arrived, she said that I had a 'case of the Mondays' and I could lay down on one of them. I nodded. The cot was stiff and uncomfortable, but I could finally rest my sleepy eyes. The nurse was defiantly right, I had the Mondays alright, in the worst form they can come...
