Lots of time had passed, and my first week at Erica's house was almost over. I was still in the process of being enrolled at Hollow Springs High so I didn't have to go to school yet. Fall break had begun for Emma and Rodger so they were at home. I was supposed to go to school after fall break, and boy was I dreading it.
I really hadn't had any social interaction with anyone, aside from Emma, whatever barista was working at the Sweetie Bean, and my brief conversations with Erica at breakfast time. I was sinking into a never ending whirlpool of sadness and only went outdoors to get to the café. I stopped catching fireflies, I barely ate. It was taking extreme measures, I had lost 9 pounds in the past week. I knew Erica was worried about me, but between caring for her kids and her job she couldn't put much mind to it. I had run out of clothes a few days ago, and began to wear the same ones over and over. All the money I brought for new clothes went into the cash register of The Sweetie Bean Café. I only had $3 left, and I still walked down to the little café and spent it all.
Hailey was working again; this time solving a crossword puzzle. I ordered a chai tea latte and took my usual spot by the window and buried myself in my journal. I wrote a summary of my week so far, and how sad I was feeling. I barely noticed when Hailey placed my drink next to me. I took a small sip and continued to write.

My week in Hollow Springs has been the worst. Sure Emma and Erica's nice and all, but I can't explain how much I miss New York, and our old apartment, and most of all; Mom. Erica still hasn't gotten a bed for me, and my makeshift mattress bed is beginning to deflate. Rodger is still as cold as ice and won't even glance at me without scowling, and Owen and Emily are in a world of their own most of the time. I feel so alone... What do I do?

I read over what I had written and noticed a head shaped shadow over the page. I whipped around to see a girl, probably my age peering over at my work. She had short wavy brown hair, a grey knitted beanie loosely perched on her head, and the thickest glasses ever. I was about to freak out on her, I mean, who reads someone else's diary like it's no big deal?? But the girl said something before I could think of what to say.
"You need a catchphrase." She said stirring a tea bag around in her cup.
"What?" I asked. What did she mean by that?
"A catchphrase, a catchy phrase to end off your journal entries." The girl said setting a large book on the table. It was a Harry Potter book, one of the larger 800 paged ones.
"Um ok..." I said starting to get up.
"I'm Iris by the way. My twin Wes is over there." Iris said pointing to a guy ordering a scone at the counter.
"You're Silvia, right?" She asked."How do you know my name?" I asked in awe.
"Small town, news travels fast. Plus I live across the street from Erica." Iris said taking a sip from her cup.
"You do?" I asked wondering how I hadn't seen her.
"Yep. I babysit Owen and Emma from time to time." Iris said grabbing her Harry Potter book.
Her brother Wes walked over to us.
"Silvia, I've been meaning to say hello!" He said setting his coffee down beside Iris.
"I see you've already met miss Harry Potter Geek." Wes laughed.
"Oh shut it." Iris said playfully punching Wes in the forearm.
"So when are you gonna be going to school?" Iris said putting down her book.
"Next Monday, I'm pretty nervous..." I said.
"Well, I can't wait to see ya there. And if you need anything, just come on over to my house." Iris said drinking her tea.
"Oh, ok. See you around." I said waving to the twins as I walked out the door.
What an event! Meeting some new friends, or at least getting some social interaction with people my age which made me feel a little better. Then I remembered that I needed a catch phrase, I raced home to develop one.
Things were looking up for me. :)
