Troubled But Strong

The Start of a New Beginning

  Leukemia- Cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue, such as the bone marrow, and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the bloodstream. This cancer is what high school student Y/N L/N has. At age 10 she was diagnosed, and has been fighting her entire life. The only thing that has saved her life.....is swimming. Not competitively, but to be free from the cancer killing her body.

Y/N is moving to Iwatobi, Japan, originally from Kyoto, Japan, but her family thought it was best for the 17 year old to move to a more quiet place. Each year the cancer is getting worse, and her time is being cut short. The friends she once had, all left once the cancer started to affect their lives as well. Y/N wanted them to live their own lives and be free without her ticking time bomb of a life.

First day at a new school, and Y/N was terrified. Y/N was expected to have a 'buddy' to show her around the school, and her classes.
Right when the H/C female entered the doors of the high school, a blond haired boy, with pink eyes runs up to her. Y/N jumped back slightly, her pills in her bag jingling together, and the boy caught the startled teen, apologizing for the scare.
"Welcome to Iwatobi! Are you Y/N L/N ?" the excited blond asked.
Y/N only nodded and the blond grabbed her arm, Y/N flinching in pain since she has to get insulin. He pulled his hand away looking at her with a worried expression.
"I'm okay, thats just my injection arm," Y/N said with a nervous smile on her face.
"Injection arm," he asked arching a brow.
"I have Leukemia....and the reason I am here is because I am getting worse, I'm close to having chronic lymphocytic leukemia,"
The boy looked like he was about to cry, but Y/N waved her hands in front of her, "I promise I'll get better and try to make friends here. As long as I am accepted and treated like a normal human being, I'm no different than you or any student here. I just have a touch of cancer," the blond smiled slightly and grabbed the H/C girl's hand.
"I'm Nagisa Hazuki, and I'm on the Iwatobi swim team," he smiled brightly.
"Nice to meet you Nagisa-kun," Y/N smiled and shook his hand.
Nagisa blushed slightly, and dragged his new friend around the school.

After the tour of the school, Y/n went to her chemistry class. Y/n silently opened the door, and the teacher looked over and smiled gently at the girl. "Are you miss L/N," he asked.
Y/N nodded and got kind of nervous for the pairs of eyes staring at her, the scar from her last surgery visible to all of the students.
"Mr.Tachibana?" the teacher asked.
He rose from his seat and Y/N blushed slightly at the tall swimmer, "Hai?"
"Catch miss L/N up on this week's chapter,"
He nodded and sat back down. "Miss L/N, please sit behind Nanase."
Y/N looked around and saw a pair of blue eyes, expressionlessly looking at her. Y/N assumed he was 'Nanase' and sat behind him. Makoto gave the H/C girl his notes, and his number attached to a little piece of paper. "Incase you need help with anything," he whispered, smiling gently at her.
Y/N mouthed a 'Thank you' and she quickly started writing down the notes and consuming different compounds, formulas, etc.

After Y/N's classes, a familiar blond stopped her in her tracks as her mom picked her up.
"Y/N- chan!!!"
She turned around, E/C eyes wide as she prepared for impact. He grabbed her shoulders, and started spurting out random information. Y/N put a hand over his mouth and smiled sweetly, "Calm down, and talk slower Nagi-kun."
The blond blushed at the nickname and mentioned something about a swim club. The H/C haired girl's E/C eyes sparkled, "Of course I'll join!" Y/N hugged him tightly.
"Really!?! What styles do you swim?"
Y/N put a finger on her chin, thinking, "Well my strong suit is Free, but I do swim all styles. Honestly, I do love backstroke, too."
"Makoto will be happy to hear that," Nagisa smiled.
"Makoto?"
"Makoto Tachibana? Isn't he in like all of your classes? As well as Haru-chan?"
"Oh! I only knew them by their last names. I didn't want to bother them to ask," Y/N laughed nervously.
A horn honked, and it was Y/N's mom motioning to her that it's time to go.
"I'm sorry Nagi-kun, but I have to go. I'll see you at lunch tomorrow, and swim practice !" Y/N waved to him goodbye, as well to Nagisa.



"How was your first day?" Y/N's mom, M/N, asked.
"Amazing," Y/N smiled and looked at the numbers in her hand.
"What are those?" M/N asked.
"Phone numbers from my swim team. Well my friends Nagisa and Makoto, too."
M/N's eyes almost popped out of her head, "Success! Well honey don't have the swim team affect your studies ok?"
"I promise," Y/N smiled.
'Maybe Iwatobi won't be so bad after all....' Y/N smiled down at the numbers in her hand, all of the nervousness leaving her body.
