7 Years Later

"Kevin, hand me the gun!" I screamed while a zombie hobbled up to me. Kevin threw me the gun and I easily caught it. I aimed right between the eyes and shot killing one zombie.

Ever since I was picked up by the military I was trained to be a fighter. I learned how to use different types of guns and grenades and that sort of stuff. It's been seven years today and I still miss my friends.

"Okay Riley I think we got them all." Kevin says then puts his hand on my shoulder.

"Good, I'm all warn out from fighting them." Kevin nods in agreement. We wait for the helicopter to land before boarding. It only seems like the logical thing to do.

When the helicopter brings us back to the military base I head into the cafeteria. I pick out some bread. Our food is scarce since most of the animals have died over the years.

After finishing my bread I head back to my room. Kevin is sitting on his bed, he looks at me and notices something is up.

"What up? You don't seem your normal self today."

"It's just that I want to visit all the places that my friends died but we can't do that. We left our cabin as it went up in flames. Madison and Corbin died during that experience. Lily and Clarissa died from starvation. Maggie, Alex, and I stayed at a hotel and nearby Maggie died. Alex and I jumped a wall and walked along the road for miles before she committed suicide..." I drift off as I feel tears forming in my eyes.

"Riley, you've told me this a bunch of times. I know and we are going to visit those spots." I look up at Kevin shocked.

"You know they won't let us." I state.

"Then we have to sneak out." Even though I'm in my late twenties and Kevin is too, we both still enjoy causing trouble.

"Okay, what's the plan?"

Kevin proceeds to tell me the plan and I listen intently. It sounds easy even though it really isn't. Basically the plan is to sneak out of base using one of the military jeeps.

When the clock strikes twelve Kevin and I both hop out of bed, we change into our uniforms and grab some food. Me and Kevin are going back to our old lives. We walk out of the room blending in with everyone else. The only difference is that we have big black bags slung across our shoulders. We slip out of the crowd and walk into the weapons room. We keep it light and only grab one knife each, a small shotgun, and extra bullets.

We step out of the room and are ready for the hard part. We run across the open field for training and into one of the jeeps. I get into the passenger seat while Kevin sits in the drivers seat. I buckle up cause ya know, safety first and we head off.

At the gates that lead to the outside world are to guards. I pull out my fake permission slip to show them that we have permission to leave the base. Kevin drives up to the gate then stops in front of the guards.

"Why do you need to leave the gates?" Guard number 1 asks us.

"Commander Smith told us that there is a crowd of zombies on the border of Iowa and Illinois that need to be taken care of." Kevin states as if he has practiced saying that without smiling. He has been practicing.

"Permission slip please." Guard 2 says holding his hand out. I hand it over to Kevin and he hands it to Guard 2. Guard 2 gives the okay to guard 1 and the gates open. Kevin drives through them as fast as possible heading in the opposite direction of Iowa and Illinois. Our first stop was towards Canada since that's where it all started. I remember those days when we didn't have to worry about anything. We were all happy. Until Alex killed Adonis, granted it was an accident but she still killed him.
