I left the room quickly and waited outside for Marian. My eyes took in everything, as my mind tried to process exactly what was happening. Did they kill him because of me? Were they here because of me? Did they even know I am here?
Before I began hyperventilating, Marian stumbled outside. Her eyes were red and I felt sorry for her.
"Are you able to give me a ride back to the store?" I mumbled, remembering my shopping.
She nodded, and I felt like a horrible friend, "I can."
"Thank you," I whispered while crawling into her vehicle.
The ride back to the store was silent except for her sniffles. I didn't try to comfort her, because there was no way I could. I knew she hadn't realized yet that I was the last person to see her brother alive, but I knew that when she did, hell would rain down on me. Cops would be at the bar, she would despise me, and I would be suspect number one.
I thanked her again when she dropped me off, and walked into the store for the second time that day. I got my shopping done quickly, only needing a few necessary things, and made my way to the cash register line.
The line seemed longer than usual, and I bristled when I felt someone step up behind me. The line across the way was shorter, so why had this person specifically came to stand behind me?
I could literally feel their breath on my neck.
Shuddering, I began to set my things on the belt. Nervous about the person who still stood closely behind me, my hands began to shake and I dropped the package of bread that I was about to put on the belt. Before I could reach down and pick it up myself, a hand shot out from behind me and picked it up for me.
Annoyed that I had to talk to the bubble invader, I turned and smiled at the person.
Immediately my guards went up. I did not know this man, but he had a familiar look about him. His dark hair was cut short, and his blue eyes pierced mine as his lips pulled into a smiled to show perfect teeth. His nose was crooked, as though it had been broken once or twice, and there was a small scar through his left eyebrow, as well as one near his right ear. He worse an inconspicuous plain black shirt with jeans. Over the shirt he wore a coat, and I would bet money that the coat was hiding things in its folds that weren't exactly legal.
"Here you go, ma'am," his warm voice held an accent that I couldn't place right off the bat. He held the bread out to me, and I snatched it from him.
"Thank you," I replied dismissively, not caring if I sounded rude or not. I turned my back to him and continued to place my items on the belt before pushing my cart forward and going to the card machine.
The girl behind the counter smiled at me, "Welcome back, Maya!"
I nodded at her, frustrated that she used my name, "Thank you, Jessica."
She began scanning my items in as she chatted happily, "That was quite a scene earlier, wasn't it?"
I nodded again, "Yes. It was a very big surprise."
"You were friends with Jason, weren't you?" she questioned me, taking her time ringing things up.
Shrugging, I replied, "He came to the bar every night. We weren't that close."
Smiling sympathetically she rung my last item up, "I understand. I lost my granpappy a while back. It hit me pretty hard."
Reigning in the temptation to roll my eyes, I swiped my card and clicked in my PIN. The man behind me began setting his things on the belt, and I took a small look.
