Star Dust

Chapter 14 ~ Andrew

 Songs pass by full of life and noise, but I am still locked in my thoughts from hours ago when I was attached. Moving robotically as if here in the cavern we were swimming in a water,  yet I can't help remembering meeting that bird girl assassin in my apartment. 

 Suddenly a girl with hair that flitted a deep gold in the light, and a face so serene and pretty but confused, probably from intoxication. She was dressed in a close fitting black shirt and jean shorts and looked ready to do something really crazy, but who isn't in this place. 

 "can you play this song for a duet?" she shows me the song "sorry I'm new" she giggles slightly and I stare her down. 

 "Are you both amateurs?"

 "not that I know of, he's right there" she points to a regular performer, a fan favorite. I nod to him as he looks her over from afar, the performer nods back. Turning to face the mystery girl in front of me who shouts "thank you" over the noise. Curious I ask "What's your name?" she laughs "it's Mystery" and with that she walks away to her singing partner to prepare for their part on stage.

 The song playing ends and now it's the new girls turn, they walk up to the stage and I grab a mic and shout to the crowd "we got ourselves an amateur performer tonight" I gesture to the new girl on stage "let's see how she does" everyone turns and claps claps as the lights on stage dimmed to low glow much like the deep sea urchins that hang from the cavern ceiling. Then all of a sudden the lights go out, even the forever glowing bits of sea life up above, music plays deep and soft at the same time and the performance of a lifetime begins.

 Bright amber light erupts on the stage and a male voice rings clear over the gasps from the crowd. Fire, real burn you if touched fire. The display of fire continues changing from its original amber colour to cooling mellow tones and brighten in ferocity as the song picks up pace, all the while dancing about the two performers. All thoughts vanished from my mind as my hands flew over the consul working with the lighting but could never pinpoint the girls exact location, even with her voice softly singing notes in behind the strength of the man's voice. 

 Suddenly their voices merged into the same tone and volume, they were now both bathed in that brilliant light. The man's booming voice grew to only a whisper in the mic and the girl came forward weaving a song of mystery into our hearts with strong notes fed by the male undertones. Their voices boomed and light erupted, a column of flame taken away from the singing duo to fly and disperse over the astounded teens below. Flying on the breeze that suddenly had come and gone, fire danced. 

 The cave ceiling shifted and a crack appeared letting water rain down menacingly, and without so much as a falter the mass of water running steady and fast but never touches the mesmerized teenagers gawking at the scene before them. I'm one of those people. The ceiling closes without any sign that it had ever opened, but nobody noticed it, they were transfixed on the singing duo. 

 The girl who's name oddly enough was Mystery had her arms out as if directing the swirling torrent of water that weaves in between groups of people mouths open wide, some even extend their arms to it but never daring to make physical contact. Finally the song nears its ending and I'm at the edge of my seat waiting in anticipation for the spectacular ending to come. They hit the last notes quick and smooth and the Mysterious girl raises her arms high over her head bringing the water up and up as the cavern shakes, yet no rocks rain down. The back wall of the cavern always empty and untouched comes forward and soon the shape of a fountain like spring emerges, apart of the rock wall and also not. 

 Finished the cavern seems lifeless without those magnificent special effects, but the spring stays and the water now flows endlessly from the once boring wall. Teens everywhere erupt into a chorus of cheers and cries for more as they walk off the stage.
