Clint was busy punching bags in the training room Agent Coulson walked in.
"Agent Barton, Director Fury wants to see you."
"Well, with his one eye I hope he gets a good look of my handsome face." Clint chuckled, turning around and walking to the bench where his towel was.
"Better not let him hear that, Clint." Coulson laughed and patted him on the back. Clint and Agent Coulson had grown close over the years, mainly due to the time they spent together when Coulson was guiding and mentoring Clint.
Clint draped the towel over his shoulder and waved goodbye to Coulson as he made his way to Director Fury's office.
"Come in." Said a stern voice from the other side of the door when Clint knocked.
"Sir, you asked to see me?"
"Take a seat, Agent Barton." Fury held out a hand and gestured to one of the chairs in front of his desk.
"Now, here's a case I want you to follow." He said while pulling out a black folder and handing it to Clint.
Clint looked questioningly at him before he was given permission to open the classified folder.
On the first page, he saw the profile of a 27 year old woman, complete with her photograph.
"Marilyn Rose. Murdered on 3rd February this year." He read out the information aloud.
Clint then flipped to the next page and was presented with the profile of a 39 year old woman.
"Janet Eastfield. Murdered on 23rd February, this year too." He looked up at Fury not quite comprehending the information, shouldn't the police be handling these murder cases?
"Carry on." Was all Fury said, leaning back in his chair and lacing his fingers on the table top.
"Chelsea Hansen. 19 years old. Murdered on 3rd of April."
"Leela Mckenzie. 22 years old. Murdered on 13th April."
Clint flipped the page and found he had come to the end of the folder.
"So, tell me Agent Barton, what have you noticed about the similarities of these four cases of murder?"
"Apart from them all being females, they all have red hair." He replied nonchalantly.
But then a thought struck. Female...red hair...Natasha!
"Very observant." Fury said, taking a look to the side. Clint could tell he was being his usual sarcastic self, but it wasn't the time to be bothered about it now, he had to protect Natasha.
"Director, I-" He was interrupted by Fury.
"So, as you may have noticed, the police aren't very capable at solving these murder cases as the number of them has been on the rise. That's where you come in."
"Direc-" Clint was interrupted yet again.
"Study these files for any leads. We've got to nail this criminal as soon as possible to prevent further casualties. I'm giving you-"
"Di-"
"Stop interrupting me, Agent Barton!" Fury barked.
Clint looked down at his feet and listened further, although the gateway to his brain seemed to have closed, disallowing entry of the information he was receiving, and all that was contained inside were worrisome thoughts.
"I'm giving you one month for this mission."
Clint nodded and Fury stood up from his seat, hands behind his back.
"I know what you were going to say, Agent Barton. It's about your girlfriend."
Clint looked up. Damn, what is Fury actually, a telepath?
"Bring her here tomorrow."
