"Lani come inside, it's getting dark!" I jump a little, typical me, getting scared of the littlest things. I grab my hoodie and start to head inside. I looked behind me, seeing the strawberry sunset, not realizing this will be the last night at my house.
I take me shoes off and walk to the dinner table. I sit down next to my younger brother Ethan and look at my plate. "Pasta again?" I say. My mother looks at me with an upset look, "Please, for one night, can we have you not complain. Lets just sit down and eat like a normal family." My mother says. I roll my eyes, all she does is talk about the bad things I do.
We all sit down and say grace. I reach for the remote and turn on the T.V. "Leilani, if you're watching anything, it's going to be the news." My father demands. He's strict, but I know what he does, he does for the best. I turn on the news and in a red banner going across the screen it shows a warning. Here in Oklahoma, we have lots of tests because we are in tornado ally, but this warning was different.
'This is a national warning, please find a safe shelter. Stay indoors and don't open your doors to anyone. This will be going on for the next few weeks.'
What was going on? This wasn't your average tornado drill. What was it? Everyone went silent. "I'm going to go to the store to get some food for the next few weeks. Stay inside" my mother says and walks out the door. "I think I'll go with her." My father says too and runs out the front door. Ethan and I blankly stare at our plates. "Lani, what's going on?" Ethan asks. "If I knew I would tell you."
1:37. The time was 1:37 A.M. and my mother and father still weren't home. I sit on the couch staring at the T.V. I was clicking through the channels. "Here we go, the news." I say to myself, knowing Ethan was asleep right next to me. "And in other news, all roads, stores and any other public places are closed due to the chemical mishap, at the National Science Lab." What? What mishap? What was going on. I walk to the window and see a man walking. He had a slight limp. The news reporters specifically said to stay indoors. Why was this man outside? I slowly walk back to the couch. I sit down and suddenly fall fast asleep.
"Leilani! Wake up!" Ethan yells. I wake up with a jolt. "What do you want?!" I yell, terrified. He was shaking. "Look outside" he says. I stand up and walk to the window. I see men and women, limping like the man outside last night. "Oh my... what is going on..." I say. "Ethan grab your back pack, pack it with a few clothes. Leave room for food." He stares at me "Lani were not leaving. Mom and dad aren't home." I grab his arm, "and they aren't coming home. Get your stuff."
I run upstairs and grab my backpack. I take a hoodie a t-shirt and some jeans. I run to my bed and lift up my mattress. Laying there was a gun my father gave me for protection, which I'm going to need. Those "people" outside, weren't people at all. Those things... were zombies.
